Mangaluru: Police Officers Galore at ‘Medico-Legal’ Workshop organized at KMC

Mangaluru: They were all police, police and more Police Officers gathered to attend the workshop on “Medico-Legal” for Police Officers held at Kasturba Medical College-Lighthouse Hill Rd on Sunday, 11 October 2015 from 10am till 5pm at the Forensic Demo Hall. Department of Forensic Medicine, Kasturba Medical College-Mangaluru and KMC Hospitals in association with Commissionerate of Police-Mangaluru City and DK Police (Karnataka state) jointly hosted the “Medico-Legal Workshop for Police Officers”. This is the second time a workshop for Police officers focusing on Medico legal aspects was conducted by Department of Forensic Medicine, KMC, Mangaluru”.

Nearly 150 police officers from Mangaluru City, DK and Udupi district participated in this workshop. The main aim of this workshop was to encourage, reinforce, refine and improve the method of approaching various types of medico legal cases among the police officers focusing on recent advances in forensic medicine for crime detection and concrete and uniform guidelines in practice of forensic medicine and toxicology. This one day exhaustive workshop was designed to cover various topics involving crime scene investigation, Estimation of time since death based on PM Changes, Asphyxial deaths, Medico legal aspects of Injuries and Sexual offences”.

The workshop was inaugurated by chief guest, Dr Sharanappa SD IPS-Superintendent of Police-DK, along with guests of honor on the dais namely Dr V Surendra Shetty-Pro-Vice Chancellor-Manipal University, Dr M Venkatraya Prabhu- Dean, KMC-Mangaluru, Dr B Suresh Kumar Shetty-State Medico-Legal Consultant-Forensic Medice, KMC-Mangaluru and Dr Jagadish Rao-District Medico-Legal consultant and convener-Forensic Medicine, KMC-Mangaluru. Addressing the gathering, Dr Sharanappa said, ” This is a very informative workshop where you can interact with the doctors, hospital staff and other medical personalities and gain more information about forensic views and news. As a responsible law enforcement officer collecting and submitting the right and genuine information about any criminal is very important. Whatever you learn today in this workshop you need to implement with responsibility, keeping bribe and corruption far away”.

He further said, “During this interactive Forensic Medico-legal” workshop you will examine evidence recovered from the crime scene, suspects and victims. You need to show keen interest in the workshop and learn new methods, how to handle criminal cases very efficiently and systematically. Enrich your knowledge through this workshop”. Dr N Surendra Shetty and Dr M Venkatraya Prabhu also spoke about the KMC institutions and its contribution to the society, and also about this forensic workshop which will gain more knowledge about the modern medico-legal procedures.

Dr B Suresh Kumar Shetty welcomed the gathering, while Dr Jagadish Rao proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Amritha Shetty and Dr Manesa , both tutors at KMC compered the programme very professionally. The invocation was delivered by Aishwarya Ramakrishna and Sujan Kumar. The chief guest and top police officers were given a tour of the KMC forensic museum, by Dr Suresh Kumar Shetty and Dr Jagadish Rao.

During today’s workshop there were talks/discussions on-: Crime Scene Investigation and Collection of Evidence from Forensic point of view”; “Mechanical Injuries, Asphyxial Deaths and its Medico-Legal Significance”; “Sexual Offences and its Medico-Legal Importance”; and “Holistic approach to determine the Post Mortem Interval. There was also a pictorial quiz for the police officers. The valedictory function was held on the same day at 5pm graced by Chief guest-Dr Sanjeev S Patil -Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic)-Mangaluru Police, and guest of honor-Dr Anand Venugopal-Medical Superintendent, KMC Hospitals-Mangaluru.
