Mangaluru: A special Cleaniness Drive was carried out in the central market area on Saturday, 6th February. The drive was flagged off by Swami Dharmavratanandaji of Ramakrishna Math, Mangalore and Deepa Pai, Managing Director of Hangyo Ice creams Ltd. Prof. Rajashekhar Hebbar, Prinipal, GFGC Car street, Prof. Mahesh K B were also present.
The drive was carried out for 3 hours from 3 pm to 6 pm. Volunteers not only cleaned the Central market area with brooms but also heaps of dirt and stinking garbage that had filled in the nooks and corners of the market were thoroughly cleaned. They also distributed awareness handbills to all the shops and customers in the market. About 60 students from Govt. First Grade College, Car Street actively participated in the drive.
The 38th Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan was carried out by Ramakrishna Mission in Karangalpady Jail Road area on 7th February 2016 from 7:30 am to 10:30 am. Jacintha Vijay Alfred, Mayor, MCC and Lily Pinto flagged off the drive in the presence of Swami Jitakamanandaji, President, Ramakrishna Math. M R Vasudev, Dr Shikaripura Krishnamurthy and others were present. Mayor Jacintha cleaned the premises of DIET, Mangalore with a broom. Volunteers were divided into three groups and each one cleaned the Jail Road, C G Kamath Road and Lions Park under the guidance of Dr Satish Rao, Ramkumar Bekal and Satish Bhat. The branches of trees that were cut down by the MCC authorities along the roads were cleared off the street using JCB thus helping the pedestrians. Worn out direction boards were repainted and awareness handbills were distributed among different households.
The 39th Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan was carried out by Ramakrishna Mission in Chilimbi area. Captain Ganesh Karnik briefed the volunteers about the details of Swacchata Abhiyan. Industrialist C A Ameen and Ganesh Bangera of Kalki Manava Seva Samiti flagged off the 39th Abhiyan. Volunteers cleaned the different areas in and around Chilmbi for almost 3 hours.
Volunteers also distributed handbills on Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan to generate awareness among the locals in the area.
Members of Balakara Sharada Mahotsava Seva Samiti, Students of Srinivasa Engineering College, Members of Kalki Manava Seva Samiti, Prof. Mahesh K B, volunteers from Nivedita Balaga, Students of Govt. First Grade College, Car Street, Vittaldas Prabhu, Prof. Sheshappa Amin, K V Sathyanarayana, Sujith Pratap, M R Vasudev, Dilraj Alva and several other eminent persons were present. About 350 volunteers participated in the Abhiyans.

May (imaginary) God bless these folks for ‘shrama daana’ to make our society a better place to live. I’ve given up on some of our elected officials who still refuse to attend any of these events to show moral, symbolic support. They had 39 chances in the last 9 months and they chose to ignore every one of them purely based on religious and political bias. Then they wonder why mangaluru was not selected for ‘smart city’ project!! Go figure!
