Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D’Souza held a press meet at the District Congress office here, on August 27.
Addressing the mediapersons, Ivan said that the 24th August incident has brought shame to the district. “It has now spread at the national and international levels. Immoral policing should not repeated in future.” He appreciated the police for their swift action in detaining 13 culprits in the Shakir assault case. This incident sends a wrong message to the world and portrays our district in bad light, he added.
He further said that the statement which was given to the media and the statement of the police commissioner on this case are different. The girl stated that Shakir pulled her inside the car and she screamed for help which lead to the locals gathering there and thrashing him. But according to other sources, the assaulters do not belong to the Attavar area. Infact, they are from different places. One of the accused is running a shop in Kadri and on the day of the incident, he was at his shop till 4pm. Some of the assaulters are activists of Bajrang Dal and one is from VHP.
He also said that when such organizations encourage to take the law in their hands, the police should take strict action against the organization. “Because of such organizations the people of the working class face problems. We should all join hands to curb immoral policing in the district and make this district a better place to live. We have requested the home minister to come to the district for a review meeting,” he said.
When asked about his stand on the Yettinahole project, Ivan replied, “I am with the government. Whatever decision the government takes, I will stand by it”.
Mayor Jacintha Alfred, MUDA Chairman Ibrahim Kodijal and others were also present.
Is this the first incidence? Please take concrete steps. The action taken should discourage anyone to repeat such incidents. Arrest release on bail, few press meets….protests…what next? Let this be the last incident. We need to be united irrespective of party, caste, sex for a just society. Let us all join hands.
