Mangaluru: ‘SUMELL’ Celebrates World Music Day

Mangaluru: ‘SUMELL’ – the Konkani Singing Club, in association with its mother body – Mandd Sobhann organised WORLD MUSIC DAY CELEBRATIONS, on Thu., Oct. 1, 2015, at 6:00 pm., at Kalaangann.

This unique celebration was the first of its kind in Mangaluru. Sunil Monteiro – Convenor, Sumell, welcomed the gathering. The celebrations began with singing of the peace mantra – ‘Asatoma’ in the Gregorian style. The singers included – Richard Monteiro, Sunil Monteiro, Jerome Coelho, Steevan Cutinho, Arthur Lobo, Llewellyn Lobo, Rynel Sequeira, Shelton Pinto, Roshan D’Souza, Manoj D’Costa and Anil Patrao.

Cajetan Dias, young Music Composer, Arranger, Teacher and Singer, Bengaluru, then took the audience on ‘A Cruise in the Ocean of Music’ by presenting a detailed explanation of different types of music.

‘Sangeet Guru’ Joel Pereira, conducted the instrumental ensemble which painted ‘A Musical Rainbow of World Music’. It included Latino Music led by Kenny Pereira on soprano saxophone, Hindustani Music led by Ustad Rafique Khan on sitar accompanied by Damodar Kumble on tabla, Spanish Music led by Roshan D’Souza on accoustic guitar, Arabic Music led by Richard Monteiro on keyboard, Afro-Cuban Jazz led by Sanjay Rodrigues on keyboard, Sufi Music led by Cajetan Dias, Carnatic Music led by Umesh Kumar Idya on the alto saxophone, Bollywood Music led by Anil Patrao on the accordion, Sunil Kumar on the violin and Kenny Pereira on the soprano saxophone and baila music by the entire orchestra. Special assistance for all kinds of music was given by Jerome Coelho on bass guitar, Arthur Lobo on rhythm guitar, Melwyn Fernandes on rhythm pad and jambe, Joel Pereira on thumba and Damodar Kumble on tabla.

Vimala Lobo, the most eminent Music Teacher of Mangalore was honoured on the occasion for her immense contribution in the field of music, by Sumell and Mandd Sobhann. Speaking on the occasion, she thanked the organisers for having organised the first ever Music Day Celebration in Mangaluru and also for inviting her to be the Chief Guest and also for honouring her.

Irine Rebello delivered the vote of thanks. Arun Raj Rodrigues and Jacqueline Fernandes compered the programme.
