Mangaluru: The Case of Two Drunk Girls Highlights Need for Parental Guidance and Orientation

Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service. Whatever form we are, able or disabled, rich or poor, it is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing; a lifelong sharing of love with others – Mother Teresa

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have earned a repute as education hubs. Quite naturally, students from all over the country as well as abroad come here to pursue higher and professional education.

Parents trust their children and secure admission for them in institutions in these two districts by paying huge amounts. But do the parents try to find out what their children do while staying in hostels?

How serious are they once they have their wards admitted to these universities? How many students remain loyal to their parents? It is a big question mark.

On September 15, a group of about 7 students (3 girls and boys) from a highly reputable college in Manipal had come to Mangaluru. They visited a hotel in the city to celebrate the completion of their examinations.

Unfortunately, taking the celebration process too far, two young girls of around 18 to 19 years of age in the group got highly drunk, losing control on themselves.

When the girls started throwing up in the hotel, the hotel staff threw them out. It was raining outside and the girls were not able to manage themselves. A passerby informed Mangalorean.com about the incident. Immediately, our correspondent informed the police and reached the spot.

One of the drunk girls was shifted into the PCR to be taken to the hospital. But the other girl, without the knowledge of the police, was taken to her room in another hotel. Later, in the night our correspondent received a call from the parent of the other girl.

The girl who was admitted to the hospital was discharged on the morning of September 16 by our team and with the help of the Kadri police, both the girls were sent back to their respective states.

There are always evil eyes in the society, looking for mischief. Something terrible could have happened to these girls if they had been spotted by anti-social elements or criminals after they were turned out of the hotel. This is to be borne in mind both by parents and students.

Parents should remember that when they send their children to other states, they need to appoint a guardian. Dakshina Kannada is always in the news for wrong reasons. Hence,in such a situation, it is not a wise idea to come to the city, get drunk and lose control over one’s self.

We say that youth are the backbone of a strong nation and the future of the country is in their hands. A nation with undisciplined youth will be in danger and can never prosper.

Disciplined students become the crown of the nation. If the same students are addicted to drugs, liquor and cigarettes and forget the meaning of discipline, how will the country be strengthened and what will be its future?

For many college students, drinking liquor and smoking has apparently become a passion or something fashionable. They do not think about the consequences of such habits.

Nowadays, every student needs counselling because when parents advise their children, they get angry at them, thinking that parents are outdated and are not the right people to advise them. Students will surely listen to a counsellor.

It is high time every college and school start counselling centre in their respective premises so that we can produce disciplined students and build a strong nation.

The hotel’s action of throwing the girls out is highly objectionable. It is utterly business-like and utterly devoid of humanism. With the help of other students the girls could have been shifted to their hostel and then the parents should have been informed. A lot can be written about declining moral standards but ultimately the society, the parents, the alienation caused by neo-liberal values, pursuit of pelf to the exclusion of all else and the education system must bear the responsibility.

Adults should have the freedom to do whatever they want to do with their money, body and life as long it doesn’t negatively harm others. In this case, these two girls clearly knew what they were doing. If they damaged any property, they should be held accountable. However, I don’t think it is fair to apply different standards on girls. For every girl who is drunk in public, there are hundreds and hundreds of men who do exactly the same!

The children go out of control. However, the parents should bring them back on the right path as a shepherd brings back the waylost sheep into the sty and mixes the black sheep with the other sheep. Throwing the Sheep out is not the answer.
