Mangaluru: Gangadhar Padubidri, a reporter working for Doordarshan TV, had been accused of strangling his wife to death in their house on J B Lobo Road in Kodikkal on July 15, 2013,
Mamata Shetty worked as a lecturer at SDM College of Law. They had an intercaste marriage and after some time, marital discord is said to have crept in.
After an altercation on that fateful day, it was alleged, Gangadhar had slapped her hard and then strangled her with a bath-towel.
The Urwa police submitted a charge-sheet against the accused. His lawyers argued that the prosecution had failed to establish that the couple had frequent fights and that he was present at the time of the incident.
They also argued that evidence of others being present in the house at that time and that the investigating officer had not probed the case properly.
The city’s first additional district and sessions court hence acquitted Gangadhar from the charges.
