The programme began with an invocation. The Principal of BIT, Dr K Palakshappa, welcomed the gathering. Addressing the graduates Palakshappa said that parents, teachers and society play an important role in a student’s life. “Getting a degree is not the end of education. Take up higher education, research and development work whenever possible. Try to work with great perseverance, collaboration to achieve your goal.”

The chief guest Dr K Byrappa, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University, delivering the graduation address said that he felt honoured to be a part of this programme for two reasons – the 3rd batch was graduating and the inauguration of the Supersonic Aerodynamic Laboratory, which very few colleges in the state possess. “When I entered the institute and looked at the vision, I felt happy. We had a great education system during the Vedic period. There is nothing comparable to knowledge. It is the ultimate, greatest thing one can possess. With knowledge, everything else like empowerment, freedom, liberty, etc. can be achieved. And that is why every country pays attention to provide education to its population. Our computer engineers have contributed greatly to the IT industry world-wide. According to statistics, 40% of the IT/software engineers are from India.”

He further said that in the present day, research is very important in any educational institution, and that he was glad that BIT gave more emphasis on research. He also said that the management should promote research in a bigger way. “The government does not spend much money for education. It only spends 2% of total expenditure for higher education, even though the future of the country is written in classrooms.”

In his presidential address, Chairman of Bearys Academy of Learning, Syed Mohamed Beary said, “Education is close to the Bearys Group’s heart. Education is not a business, it is something much beyond that. We started with just 4 students, and today we have 18 institutions. Never go behind wealth, never go behind the ‘Lakshmi’. We need to go behind ‘Saraswati’ and you will earn ‘Lakshmi’. Knowledge is power. Knowledge, youth, money, vision should be shared with others. When we share, we grow. Talking about bureaucracy and corruption is not enough, to correct it. We should correct ourselves first and contribute to the society.”

He concluded saying, “Graduation day is a celebration and a separation. You will be missed. Be successful, but above all be a good human being.”

S A Khan gave a powerpoint presentation on the Supersonic Aerodynamic Research Laboratory and the research topics conducted with its help like isolation of shock waves, micro jets to control base pressure and jet noise, etc.

Director of NITK Surathkal, Prof Swapan Bhattacharya congratulated the graduates and thanked the institution for giving him the opportunity. He said that in India we categorize institutions as public, private, private-aided, etc., but by international standards, there are only two types of institutions, viz., good and average. “All good institutions have a good ambiance. BIT already has the necessary conditions for becoming a great institute with its pleasant ambiance. This is a very lovely campus. Every institution creates professionals, but only great institutions create personalities. You have to dream big, always remain positive and avoid blaming others. A successful person never criticizes anybody other than himself while an average person criticizes everybody else but himself.”

“Always look at positive prospects. Even if you do a small thing, you should do it with a serious intention or not do it at all. Your passion should converge with your profession. Do what you enjoy, and enjoy what you do. To enjoy studies, you should enjoy life. And never lose your smile, for that is the mark of professionalism.”

K Lakshminarayana, Group General Manager – HR, MRPL, said that there are three things in life that should be kept in mind: ethical values, environment and attitude. “Knowledge can be used for bad as the engineers involved in 9/11 attacks did, and so we must work with ethical values and use knowledge for the betterment of society. Your DOB and DOD are fixed, what you do between those two depend on you.”

The BIT Memoir for the year 2015, which consists of the most treasured feelings and achievements of every graduating student, was released. Mementos were also handed over to the students on the occasion.

Campus director Prof Sainath compered the programme.
