Mangaluru: The CITU staged a protest in front of the Mayor’s office, MCC premises against the irregularities in providing water to Jayanagar ward here, on July 24.
CITU leader Sunil Kumar Bajal said that more than 200 families reside in Jayanagar, Bajal and from the past 15 days, they have been facing problems in getting municipality water. During the Eid celebrations, some residents had to depend on rain water to meet their needs. Pointing the lack of responsibility shown by the ward Corporator, he said, “The ward Corporator Sumaiya never visited the area or did anything to help the people of the area. The residents tried their best to contact her, but she is missing. Later, when the residents requested the Mayor to visit the ward, she assured to visit the ward on July 23. Leaving all their work, the residents waited for the Mayor’s visit, but the Mayor too did not turn up.”
Sunil further said that the Corporator of the ward is neither bothered to solve the problems of the people nor make arrangements to provide water to them. “Because of the Corporator’s attitude, we have been forced to take this step and stage a protest against the Mayor. We will not move from here till the residents of ward number 53 get the supply of water,” he said. He demanded the Mayor to come out from the chamber and give assurance to the protesters of providing water and solving the problem permanently.
The Mayor Jacintha Alfred, after meeting the protesters and listening to their grievances, said that the work is under progress and due to some technical problems, there was some delay in fixing the pipeline. She said, “We will fix a Sintex tank and provide water to the residents of Jayanagar.” She also said that the problem will be solved by evening. “The work is under progress near the railway gate. We are changing the pipeline so that water will flow freely to the area.”
After getting the assurance from the Mayor, the protesters dispersed from MCC premises.
