Mangaluru: With Earphones Plugged in, NITK Student Dies of Train Hit while at Walk

Mangaluru: Chetan Chandrakant Chandavar (20), a student of fifth semester BTech at NITK Suratkal, met a tragic end on the Konkan railway track near Suratkal on Friday.

He hailed from Kumta in Uttar Kannada district. The fifth semester examination had got over on Thursday. In a relaxed mood, he and his two friends, Laksmish and Sahana, had gone on a walk towards Pavanje river along the railway track which is located behind their hostel.

Chetan walked on the track with earphones plugged in, listening to music. He did not notice train approaching from the opposite direction. The other two, who were following him at a distance of about 100 metres, spotted the train and shouted at Chetan to alert him but he could not hear the voices.

They also tried to save him but by the train had already hit him and dragged him along over about 100 metres. He got thrown to a side in a mutilated state. Sahana and Lakshmish were hit by gravel pieces that splashed around and were injured.

The police and NITK officials arrived at the spot on hearing the news. Chetan’s final rites are likely to be held in Mangaluru.

Chetan, a brilliant student, was the son of Chandrakant Chandavar, an engineer in a private firm in Bengaluru and Pushpa of Kumta. To facilitate Chetan’s studies, the family had taken up an apartment in Kodialbail in the city. He is survived by parents and a brother.
