” Blood is a lifeline and its value is only recognized when we are in need of it to save the lives of our near and dear ones ”

“Do you feel you don’t have much to offer? You have the most precious resource of all: the ability to save a life by donating blood! Help share this invaluable gift with someone in need”.

“If you’re a blood donor, you’re a hero to someone, somewhere, who received your gracious gift of life. The finest gesture one can make is to save life by donating Blood. The blood donor of today may be recipient of tomorrow”

Mangaluru: When we donate blood, one may ask-Where would our blood be going? Who would be helped by it? The answer is simple, your blood could save a life of a mother? A father? A son or daughter? A baby? An adult? A person battling cancer, sickle cell disease or maybe a person involved in a vehicle accident? Blood donation is a simple, four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments. It is a safe process, and a sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded.

The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-15 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 20 minutes. The average adult has about 10 pints of blood in his body. Roughly one pint is given during a donation. A healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 56 days, or double red cells every 112 days. There are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. Typically, two or three of these are produced from a pint of donated whole blood — hence each donation can help save more than one life.

And that’s what exactly took place at Besant Women’s College auditorium when Besant  NSS Unit and Lions Club Mangalore-Kodialbail, in collaboration with Tejaswini Hospital, Mangaluru had organized a ‘Blood Donation and Detection Camp’ on 20 January 2015. After seeking God’s blessings through prayers rendered by a group of NSS girls,  Meera Coelho-Besant NSS Unit in-charge welconed the gathering and introduced the dignitaries on the dais namely- Ln Kishore D Shetty- President of Lions Club-Kodialbail, Ln Chandrahas -member-Lions Club-kodialbail, Dr Deenamanju Shetty- Resident Doctor-Tejaswini Hospital, Dr Sudha K- principal, Besant women’s College and Raviprabha- Lecturer-Besant women’s College.

Ln Chandrahas and Dr Sudha in their address to the students stressed the importance of blood donation and urged the students to donate during emergency times, when someone is very much needed of blood. Five-10-minutes of one blood donor’s time + 350 ml. of  blood = One life saved ! The blood that these 57donors surely did gave someone another chance at life. One day that someone may be their close relative, a friend, a loved one—or even one of them. By donation of blood meant a few minutes to them, but a lifetime for somebody else.

The Tejeswini technicians followed the procedures very systematically during the blood transfusion process. Kudos to the team of Tejaswini Hospital; and to the hard-working NSS team and also to the Lions Club-Kodialbail members for making this project a grand success and community appreciable. The proceedings of the event was compered by Jivitha, while the vote of thanks was delivered by lecturer Raviprabha.

In conclusion of my report-Some of you may ask-Why Donate Blood? You don’t need a special reason to give blood; you just need your own reason. Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend. Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day. Some believe it is the right thing we do. The number one reason donors say they give blood is because they “want to help others.”  Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. And you’ll feel good knowing you’ve helped change a life.

A life may depend on a gesture from you, a bottle of Blood. To give blood you need neither extra strength nor extra food, and you will save a life. Blood Donation will cost you nothing but it will save a life! Tears of a mother cannot save her Child. But your Blood can. To the young and healthy it’s no loss. To sick it’s hope of life. Donate Blood to give back life. Blood is meant to circulate. Pass it around. Share a little, care a little – Donate Blood. And when you decide to donate blood contact your local Red Cross Society, or any Hospital Blood-Banks or any Lions Club Organization in town. Thank You!

I end this report with the lyrics from the song “How To Save A Life” by the band Fray :

Step one, you say, “We need to talk.”
He walks, you say, “Sit down. It’s just a talk.”
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
‘Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defence
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you’ve told him all along
Pray to God, he hears you
And I pray to God, he hears you

And where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you’ve followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he’ll say he’s just not the same
And you’ll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life

How to save a life

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
How to save a life

How to save a life
