Marthoma Syrian Church to Celebrate Silver Jubilee on Sun 27 Aug

Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Mangalore Press Club, Rev M Abraham Varghese-Pastor of Marthoma Syrian Church, Near Athena Hospital-Falnir, Mangaluru said, “The Marthoma Syrian Church members here at Mangaluru were migrated from various parts of Kerala, especially from the Central part of Travancore since 1963. Since then, we have been conducting the Sunday worships at different locations until 1996 since we didn’t have our own premises. But in the year 1996, The Almighty God blessed us to construct our very own Church at Mission compound, near Athena Hospital/YMCA.”

He further said, “In the year 1992 we regained the Edavaka Status, and currently we are functioning under the Chennai-Bengaluru Diocese. The journey from 1963 to 2017 was quite long, and this year will be a memorable year since we are celebrating our Silver Jubilee. The Silver Jubilee celebrations will be held on Sunday, 27 August 2017, which will be graced by MLC/Chief Whip of Karnataka Legislative Assembly Ivan D’souza; and His Holiness Rt Rev Dr C L Furtado (CSI- Bishop) will bless the occasion. Silver Jubilee members will be honoured by Rev Gigy Thomas, the former Vicar. During the occasion, we are also releasing a souvenir to commemorate the Silver Jubilee”.

“We are functioning a student centre (for students coming to Mangaluru for studies), which helps for guiding and counselling and provide these students with a second home away from their parents. 85% of the students studying in Mangaluru institutions hail from Central parts of Kerala. We are also providing our service at local levels like shelter for the needy, helping the poor students for their education; organizing blood donation camps; visiting patients at hospitals and old age homes, and praying for them, among many other community services. For all our social enriching programmes, we thank Rt Rev Dr Mathews Mar Maccarios Episcopa of Chennai-Bengaluru Diocese for his support and guidance, and also other well-wishers and political leaders for their help” added Rev Abraham Varghese.

Mathew Phllpose (Vice president), K Mathew (Secretary) of the Church, and K John- media coordinator were also present at the press meet.
