Mayor Bhaskar Inaugurates Newly Constructed Entrance to Nehru Maidan

Mangaluru: The Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Bhaskar K inaugurated the newly constructed entrance of Nehru Maidan here on August 14.

The entrance to the Nehru Maidan was constructed at a cost of Rs 21 lakh.

Addressing the mediapersons Mayor Bhaskar said, “Nehru Maidan has a history, the first prime minister Nehru had visited this ground and delivered a speech. Since then the ground has been named after Nehru as Nehru Maidan. Since the entrance to the Nehru Maidan was not in good shape, former Mayor Kavitha Sanil along with another former Mayor Sashidhar Hegde had taken initiative to have a suitable entrance to this maidan”.

The entrance was inaugurated by unveiling the plaque, planting a sapling and later cutting the ribbon by Mayor Bhaskar along with former Mayors.
Mayor Bhaskar further said, “This area comes under the smart city, from the A B Shetty circle to Clock – Tower the roads and the surrounding area will be developed and beautified at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore. The work has already started and is in progress.

Former Mayor Sashidhar Hegde speaking on the occasion said, “Mangaluru has a rich culture and tradition and we have tried to retain our culture in all aspects. Nehru Maidan has a history, we have erected the statue of our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the ground. Later we thought of having a beautiful entrance to this ground and today it has been realized. This entrance with a special design will be the permanent entrance to the Nehru Maidan”.

Former Mayor Kavitha Sanil said, “When I was the Mayor, I along with Sashidhar Hegde discussed of having a unique entrance to the Nehru Maidan. Later we discussed it with architect Chandra Kiran and he prepared a beautiful design. My wish was to inaugurate the entrance before the completion of my tenure but as the elections were declared and the model code of conduct was in force, we could not do it. The entrance has come out very well according to the design and I would like to thank the architect for the same.”

Deputy Mayor Mohammed delivered the vote of thanks. MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir, Corporator Praveen Chandra Alva and others were also present.

It is sad that such functions are becoming show-off functions of parties. These days we see either Congress only OR BJP only making one wonder if these are party functions and not public functions
