Mayor Harinath Flags off 7 Dry Waste Collecting Vehicles
Mangaluru: “Under the banner of “Namma Mangaluru Swaccha Mangaluru”, the MCC has taken measures to collect the wet and dry waste separately under the leadership of the Health committee chairperson Kavita Sanil”, said Mayor Harinath in a press meet held at the MCC premises here on October 26.
Addressing the mediapersons Mayor Harinath said that we will collect the dry waste once a week and the people of Mangaluru should co-operate by separating the wet and dry waste.
Speaking on the occasion Kavita Sanil said that the co-operation from the people is important for the successful management of the wet and dry waste. Citizens of Mangaluru should separate the dry and wet waste and hand it over accordingly when the vehicle comes for collection. If the waste is not be separated, such waste will not be collected.
The wet waste such as vegetables, fruits, food, chicken, fish, tissue paper, banana leaves, and cooked food will be given directly to the people who come to collect the wet waste every day.
The dry waste such as plastics, chocolate wrappers, paper, glass, rubber, wood, coconut waste, old clothes, house dust, make-up items and metal will be collected once a week.
People should utilize the facilities provided by MCC and help in carrying out the waste management scientifically and successfully.
When asked about the MRPL road construction, Mayor Harinath said that the MRPL has agreed to pay 70% of the total cost for the construction of the road and 30% will be spent by the MCC. The estimated cost is Rs 41 crore. A tender will be called on Friday and work will start soon. At present the MRPL is constructing a new road near Kuloor and the existing road will not be useful for MRPL. As soon as the tender process is completed, contract will be given for the construction of the road. The contractor will also take care of the maintenance of the road for 2 years. The drainage work in the city will be done under the Premier FAR funds.
When asked about the Thumbay dam, Harinath said, “By November end we will close the gate of the old Dam. Water upto 5 meters will be stored in the new dam. For the 41 acres of land which will submerge under water, compensation will be given. We have asked the government to sanction Rs 250 crores for compensation, at present we need only Rs 50 crore to pay as compensation for the families whose land will submerge in water.
Regarding the Ramakrishna Mission Road, MLA has held talks with the authorities of Ramakrishna Mission. The issue will be solved soon. Gujjarakere will also be renovated.
When asked about the parking problems in the city, Harinath said, “Earlier the police were locking the wheels of vehicles parked in front of the KSRTC Bus stand. We have received a letter from the police in this regard and investigated the matter. There are litigation’s against some of the buildings which have used the parking space for other purposes.
A traffic road safety committee meeting will be held. We have complained about the parking problems. It is the duty of the police to control the traffic. Let them lock the wheels of vehicles parked in no-parking zones. If the police continue locking the wheels of vehicles everyday, people will stop parking the vehicles in such places.
The dry waste collecting vehicles were flagged off by the Mayor. Sashidhar Hegde, Lancelot Pinto, Premanand Shetty and others were also present.
