After inaugurating the yard, Mayor Harinath said, “I am very happy to inaugurate the street vendors yard since it was a very long pending dream which has been realised today. It was the Supreme Court order to provide land at a particular place to all the street vendors to earn their livelihood. I discussed the street vendors issue with the council members and we finally decided to provide this land for the street vendors.”

Mayor Harinath further said, “This place is in the heart of the city and it was very difficult to provide it to the street vendors as it is situated in a prime location. We already have 216 registered street vendors and have issued identity cards to 208 of them, they can carry out their trade here. Now it is the duty of all the street vendors to keep this place clean. This place should be utilized in a good manner and the street vendors should vacate the streets. We have received many complaints from the public regarding the inconvenience because of the street vendors, this should be avoided henceforth,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir said, “I congratulate the Mayor and all the council members for providing the land for the street vendors for carrying out their trade. We all know that the land in this area costs in crores, but keeping in mind the welfare of the street vendors, the MCC has provided this piece of land for the street vendors to carry out their trade”.

The Commissioner further said, “The footpath is for the pedestrians and not for the street vendors. All the street vendors should stop doing business on the streets and shift here where the MCC has officially given identity cards to 208 street vendors. Whoever wants to do their business, let them come forward and register their names in the MCC and we will provide them with a place to carry out their trade. At the same time, I request all the street vendors to maintain cleanliness in this area, so that Mangaluru will look more beautiful.”

He also appreciated the Street vendors committee members for co-operating with the MCC during the time of the distribution of stalls for the street vendors.

Corporator Lancelot Pinto also spoke on the occasion. Former Mayor Sashidhar Hegde, Chairperson of Health committee Kavitha Sanil, Deepak Poojary, Sabitha Misquith, Revenue officer Praveen Kumar, Sunil Kumar Bajal and others were also present.
