Mayor Kavitha Strikes Gold in National-level Karate Championship 2017
Mangaluru: After a gap of nine years Mayor Kavitha Sanil won gold in the National-level Karate Championship 2017, under the 65 kg and above category, held at Nehru Maidan here on November 5.
Facing a tough competition against Nisha Nayak in the finals Kavitha Sanil with her incredible punches defeated Nisha 7 – 3. In the beginning, Nisha and Kavitha stood at 3 points each, but after 26 seconds Kavitha took the lead and won the gold and Nisha won the silver medal.
In the Semifinals, Kavitha Sanil defeated Kavya 8 -0.
Kavitha was the National champion from 1996 to 2008 and had thrice won international awards in the 65 kg and above Black belt women’s category.
After winning the gold, speaking to the mediapersons Kavitha Sanil said, “I am very happy to win the Gold in the 65 kg and above Black belt women’s category. I am a mother of two kids, after my delivery, I had not taken part in any competitions. From the past three months, I was practising Karate aiming to get the gold.”
Kavitha further said, “You all know I was distracted and disturbed because of the recent incidents. But from the last two days, I had practised day and night. Earlier When I was 2 months pregnant I had taken part in the Karate Championship. Both my deliveries were not normal, I had not taken any rest after both the deliveries which I realised during the competition. My opponents were not very tough, even though I lacked stamina I did not give up. I will also take part in the grand championship which will be held here after an hour or so”.
With a National-level Karate Championship victory in the 65 kg and above Black belt women’s category. Kavitha has proved that she will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
