MCC to Plant 1500 Saplings on World Environment day – Kavitha Sanil

Mangaluru: “To mark the World Environment day, the MCC will hold a sapling planting programme in all the 60 corporation wards. In every ward, 25 saplings will be planted from May 5.  We will plant 1500 saplings in the MCC limits and the inaugural programme will be held at the Town Hall premises on May 5″, said Mayor Kavitha Sanil in a press meet held at her chamber, MCC premises here on June 2.

Addressing the mediapersons Kavitha said, “On the same day a workshop for the permanent employees, daily wage labourers and subcontract labourers of MCC will be held at the Town Hall at 9:00 am. Experts will conduct the workshop for 844 workers and train them on maintaining cleanliness, good health and the use of safety gear during work. Those working in waste management within the MCC limits will be given health cards”.
Kavitha further said, “We request the people of Mangaluru to separate wet and dry waste in separate containers before handing it over to the Antony Waste management. The Urban development ministry has decided to start the wet and dry waste separation drive in all the 4041 towns in the state from June 5. On that day the MCC members, officials, staff and the workers along with the public will take an oath of separating wet and dry waste.”

 Kavitha also said, “The waste collection vehicle will come every day to collect the wet and dry waste. Wet waste such as vegetables, fruits, food, chicken, fish, tissue paper, banana leaves etc should be disposed of in the green bucket. Dry waste such as plastic covers, milk packets, chocolate wrappers, paper, glass, box, rubber, wood, coconut shell, old clothes, dust, beauty items etc should dispose of in the Blue bucket. The wet and dry waste will be collected every day. All should make use of the facilities and help the MCC to carry out the waste management effectively in a scientific manner”.
Kavitha also stressed that the Monsoon has begun and there are chances for mosquitoes to breed and spread of diseases. Hotel owners should keep overhead tanks, drums, barrels or vessels closed. Hotels should provide hot water to their customers. Trays of the pots should be filled with sand. Shells of coconuts, tyres etc should be stored in a dry place. Anyone suffering from fever should do the necessary tests.”
Former Mayor Sashidhar Hegde and corporator Abdul Rauf were also present.

Thank you, dear Mayor Kavitha, for your wise leadership and your active participation in planting new trees in commemoration of the fast approaching “Vanamahotsava” season in and around Mangalore. If required, we must dedicate this day as a optional holiday so that people can gather together and see in which way they can plant a new tree or sow a new seed in order to utilize the space available so that the new plants and also the new seeds sprout into healthy plants and trees in the days ahead. Great initiative. Even if 20% of them survive, we are talking about a few hundred more trees in the city. Appreciate this program to educate people and make our city a greener, cleaner place.
