Mangalorean Catholic Community Sohar marks Good Friday with live way of the cross
Oman: It was for the first time in the history of St Anthony’s church, Sohar that The Passion of the Christ was organised by members of the Mangalorean Catholic community of Sohar (MCCS) to mark the day of Good Friday.
The act started at around 7:00 pm after the Good Friday service concluded in the church. Large number of people gathered in the church compound where the stage was set up. Fr Augustine the Parish priest of the church welcomed the guests and said that, the liturgy of today’s service is not complete till the end of this enactment.
It began with the opening scene where Pontious Pilate questions Jesus Christ and hands him over to the crowd. In the next scene, he is made to carry the cross on his shoulders. Then while on his way, Simon of Cyrene is made to help Jesus carry the cross. Later in the following scenes, Jesus meets Mary, then he is dragged, beaten stripped of his garments. While he is carrying the cross, Veronica wipes his face with white cloth and his blood filled face is miraculously printed on the cloth. Finally, Jesus is nailed to the cross. Saying his final words, Jesus gives up his spirit.
With realistic make up, special lights and sound effects the Passion of the Christ was enacted beautifully. It was a true account of what Jesus had suffered during his passion and it was enacted very well by all members of MCCS lead by Deepak D’Souza and Michael Crasta. For the parishioners of St Anthony’s church it was a great moment to witness it for the first time.
In the end, Fr Augustine thanked all the members of MCCS, for enacting the passion of the Christ and making it feel like the real passion. The crowd also appreciated the outstanding performance of all the actors.
