Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan: Mumbai Alumni celebrate ‘Savinenapugalu’, the Reminiscence

Mumbai: There were meetings of friends after decades, nostalgic moments, chit-chats, laughter, serious speeches, funny dialogues, music, masti and what not…. The meeting hall of Hotel Ashwith in CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai witnessed all these. The occasion was the “MCE Alumni Reminiscence 2016” of Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan.

The Mumbai Alumni of one of the oldest and leading Engineering colleges from Karnataka, the Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan, organized an alumni meet to recall the old memories of college days. The core committee of the Alumni from Mumbai, formed nearly six months back with 22 enthusiasts strived hard to make it a memorable evening. The event was organized with co-ordination from Malnad Engineers Association (MEA), Hassan and MCE Alumni Association (MAA), Hassan.

The evening began with a high tea with registration. Then followed the stage function to mark the day. The Alumni Meet started with a prayer by Mrs. Shashidhar Rao. The distinguished guests lighted the lamp to declare the inauguration of the events.The stage function was presided over by Prof MKG Kumar, the President of the Malnad Engineers’ Association (MEA) who is an alumnus of 1967-Mech. In his presidential address, Prof. MKG Kumar said that he witnessed alumni meets of MCE in Hassan, Dubai, US and now here in Mumbai, and this is one of the well-organized events, and he appreciated the hospitality of the organisers.

The guest of honour, Principal of the college, Dr KS Jayantha, who is also an alumnus of the college, briefed on how the college has developed in the last 56 years. He also highlighted on some of the achievements of the college and its students and alumni.

There were distinguished guests on the dais who are also alumni of the college. Sadiqulla Sohrab – the alumnus from the first batch of the college in 1966, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis – Principal of St Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru and alumnus of 1975, Dr Harry Moraes – leading industrialist, chairman of Fabtech Enginering Dubai and alumnus of 1976, James V Mendonca – MD, Reliable Fabricators LLC, Dubai and alumnus of 1977, Dr. Abdul ShariffHajee – Principal of PA College of Engineering, Mangaluru and alumnus of 1982, Dr SR Shankapal – Vice chancellor of Ramaiah University of Applied sciences Bengaluru and alumnus of 1982 were present on the dais and addressed the gathering. Mukul Tagore – senior member of Mumbai core committee and alumnus of 1970 introduced all guests and welcomed the gathering. Shankar Bhat – Ex-BARC, and alumnus of 1982, briefed about the Mumbai core committee and how they worked hard to make this meet happen.

A colourful souvenir was released to mark the occasion, by the first batch alumnus Sadiqulla Sohrab. The souvenir was special because it contained a directory with photos and whereabouts of all the participants. Keerthy Sunder, who was the man behind the compilation of the database of the alumni, which was published in the souvenir, briefed about the souvenir.

Mahendra Kumar Gowda from Bengaluru, an alumnus of 1990, along with his team, presented a slide show and explained to the gathering about the “Make in MCE’ programme initiated by the 1990 batch alumni last year during their silver jubilee alumni meet. This project is started with a cause to help the students to conduct project work without any financial hassles and to guide them.

The meet was attended by about 160 alumni from all over the world, like US, Dubai, Singapore, Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Chennai and Hassan. All alumni attendees were presented with a copy of the souvenir and a memento.

The MAA and MEA members who had travelled to Mumbai to witness the meet, honored all core committee members with a shawl and sandalwood garlands.

Then followed the networking, chit chat, music, masti and dinner.
The next day, a grand gala dinner was arranged at Country Inn Hotels at Mahape, which was hosted by the 1987 alumnus Ramprasad Rao. The evening was marked with music, games, mimicry, dance and dinner. Many alumni like Chandrashekhar, Vijay Mayya, Kiran, Suhas Hegde, Amarnath Shetty, Mukul Tagore, MKG Kumar displayed their talent in singing, mimicry and skits to recreate the college days. Old songs were sung by Shravani Rao, Maithili Rao, Shailaja Shetty and Sharan Nayak.

Altogether, the two evenings were fun filled, recreating the old college days, and memorable forever for all those who participated in it.

Photos indicate that all of u had a good time meeting ur friends and exchanging pleasantries while remembering ur college days.

It was indeed a great pleasure to meet our friends after more than 3 decades. The success of the meet is the result of hard work put forth by Mr. Shankar Bhat and the core team.
It is very memorable and anticipate similar type of grand meets in the future

Kudos to organisers lead by Mr K Shankar Bhat who has this rare talent of networking and bringing together all the long lost friends. It was a great pleasure to meet the grand old MCEits after several years. Excellent coverage by Mangalorean.com, Thanks Mangalorean.com The meet was much more successful and managed efficiently than I expected. It gave a good opportunity to meet all our old friends after a gap of several years. Sometimes I wonder why all of us could not meet like this in the previous years. In fact, this was a global meet organised by young and old Alumni of MCE from different parts of Mumbai. It was a finely tuned event with micro level planning and execution which has set up international benchmark for future events.I am proud to be associated with this organising core team.

It was my first Alumni meet since I graduated from MCE in 1985 . It was a well arranged programme thanks to K Shankar Bhat , Keerthy Sunder and the team. Most of our senior alumni right from 1969 batch were in attendance and we could hear their success stories in life after the MCE . It is very heartening and encouraging to note that many of the MCE alumnis have made it big in their carrier round the world.
