Measures taken to solve drinking water crisis – DC
Mangaluru: The district administration has taken measures to avoid water scarcity and solve the water crisis, said the deputy commissioner Dr Jagadeesha in a press meet held at the DC’s office here, on November 5.
Addressing the mediapersons, DC Dr Jagadeesha said, “Recently the district faced a severe water crisis. This time we will store water in all the dams. By the end of December, the concerned authorities should ensure maximum water storage in all dams. If private companies want to generate power from the stored water, they should take permission from the district administration and this process will be mandatory. The engineers from the Small-scale Irrigation System should take responsibility in this regard. If there is excess flow of water after the dams have been filled to maximum capacity, only then will permission be given to companies to produce power.”
The DC further said, “Mangaluru City Corporation and the local administration should hold awareness programmes on water consumption. Permission will not be given for new borewells. If anyone violates these orders, they will be punished accordingly.”
To store 5 meters of water in the newly constructed Thumbay dam, a minimum 47 acres of land would be required. A report regarding the acquisition of land of this purpose has been sent to the state government. “Those who will be losing their properties due to this acquisition will be compensated and a meeting will be called next week to discuss this issue. We have also taken measures to store 7 meters of water in the old dam”, added the DC.
Plans for storing maximum capacity of water in the AMR and Thumbe dams have been made. The stored water is to be utilized for three months and prevent another water crisis in the city.
ADC Kumar and MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazir were also present.
