Measures Taken to Prevent Water Shortage, Marriage Halls Issued Notice to Obtain Trade License – Mayor Kavitha Sanil

Mangaluru: “After I have taken charge as the Mayor of MCC, drinking water problem was the first challenge. When I took charge as the Mayor of MCC, I immediately visited the Thumbay Dam and later discussed the issue with the concerned officials to provide regular water supply during the critical period. On March 23, 2017, the water in the Thumbay dam was only 3.38 meters. We had later released the water from the AMR dam and stored up to the 5 meter level in the Thumbay dam. I have satisfaction in my work and I have provided enough water to the people of Mangaluru during the critical period. From January 11, tomorrow, we will store water up to a level of 6 meters’, said the Mayor Kavitha Sanil during the press meet held at her chamber here on January 10.

Addressing the mediapersons Kavitha Sanil said, “To maintain the water level up to 6 meters in the Thumbay dam about 50.88 acres of land will submerge. Thirty-seven families will lose their land in Bantwal, Panemangaluru and Sajipa village. In Sajipa Munnur 19 families, Panemangaluru 2 and Bantwal Muda 16 families will lose their land. We need to compensate for all the 37 families whose private land will submerge in the process of storing 6 meter level of water in the Thumbay Dam. For that, we need at least Rs 37 to 40 crore funds. This time we will take the land on rent and MCC will spend Rs 19 lakhs for the same.”

Kavitha Sanil further said, “At present, the water level in Thumbay dam is 5 meters and from tomorrow we will increase it to 6 meters. If we will increase the water level to 6 meters, the water will be enough for 60 days. Last year the government had provided Rs 7 crore compensation to 26 families. This year all the 37 families have agreed to give their land.”

When asked about the disconnection of illegal water connections Kavitha Sanil said, “We have disconnected 15 illegal water connections and the process is on. We will curb all the illegal water connections. Some of the media had highlighted on the illegal massage parlours operation in the city and the Mayor maintaining silence about it. It is not the question of maintaining silence if there are any illegal massage parlours or gambling centers operating it is the duty of the police to take action. Many marriage and party halls in the city are operating without obtaining the trade license. I have already warned the owners to obtain the trade licence, failing to do so they will be shut down in the middle any functions, she warned. A convention hall in the city has paid Rs 7 lakh. We have issued notices to all the halls to obtain the trade license and instructed the officials to visit every marriage and party hall for inspection of the same.”

Chief Whip Sashidhar Hegde, Sabitha Misquith and others were also present.

Our beloved Mayor is hundred percent correct in emphasizing the water conservation in the City of Mangalore since water will always remain to be a precious commodity throughout India. When the population is growing every corner of the towns and cities, all over India, with the uncertainty of rain each year, water level in our lakes, dams and rivers will pose a concern all the time. We still remember vividly the shortage of water even during our school days, and we also remember our prayers in our churches, temples and mosques for timely rain, year after year. Shortage of water is directly related to the number of new buildings that have been constructed in Mangalore and Udupi districts. Where one owner lived with max. 6 person family, when this house and plot is sold to a developer, the builder then constructs a residential building of 5 to 25 stories with 30 to 150 apartments which when multiplied by a satellite family of 4 would amount to 120 people to 600 people utilizing water! Why can’t the authorities get this simple math and stop new construction altogether to contain water shortage and to maintain water resources well. Marriage… Read more »
