Milagres College Kallianpur to celebrate Golden Jubilee on January 13
Udupi: The Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Milagres College and Milagres Pre-University College, Kallianpur will be held on 13th January said Dr Gerald Pinto principal of the college.
He was addressing speaking at a press meet held at the college office on January 10, Milagres College was started with a far-sighted vision of the 83 years old Monsignor Denis Jerome D’Souza who was instrumental in providing higher education to the rural students of Kallinapur area. “The boys and the girls who work in the fields should be able to come to the college straight from the field.” With this vision, Monsignor D.J.D’Souza founded the college in the year 1967. The famous Historian Dr Paduru Gururaja Bhat took over the responsibility as the founder principal and provided academic leadership to the college.
In the beginning the P.U. section had Arts & Commerce streams and Degree section had the B.A. and B.Com. courses. In 1981 Science Section and later on B.B.M., B.C.A., M.S.W. & M.Com. courses were also started.
In the beginning the classes were conducted in the high school building, later in the year 1967 a two storied building was constructed. Subsequently with the help of U.G.C. and Well wishers of the college a separate Science block, laboratory, library, playground, ladies hostel, canteen, etc were constructed. In 1992 the Silver Jubilee memorial hall was built. In 2011 Miracle, a 3 storied building, was built.
The college which was started in 1967 with 231 students, today houses 1800 students with 95 dedicated teaching and 30 administrative staff. The college has acclaimed several national and International achievements.
On Thursday 12th January 2017 the celebration begins at 9.30 a.m. with Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese along with other priests will offer thanks giving mass at the Milagres Cathedral. On 13th January at 9.30 a.m. the formal celebrations will commence under the presidentship of Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, the Bishop of Udupi Diocese. Pramod Madhwaraj, the minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries, Government of Karnataka, will be the chief guest. Ivan D’Souza, the Chief Whip, Government of Karnataka, Oscar Fernandes, M.P., Janardhan Thonse, member Zilla Panchayat, Dhananjay Kunder, Member Taluk Panchayat, Pushpa Kotian, President, Kallianpur Gram Panchayat, Alfred Crasto, Alumnus will be the guest of honour. Dr Fr Lawrence C D’Souza, Secretary, CESU and other eminent personalities will grace the occasion.
On the occasion of golden jubilee celebration, Fr William Gonsalves and Shirthadi William Pinto who helped the founder of the college will be felicitated along with former Correspondents, retired Principals, retired teaching and administrative staff, staff and student achievers.
Peter A Lewis, M Janaki Brahmavar and Daniel Monterio will be honoured for their outstanding contribution in the field of painting, literature and philately respectively. In the afternoon there will be a cultural program by the students of the college.
