Minister Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurates hi-tech fish market
Udupi: The hi-tech fish market in Udupi will be a model in the country said Minister for Fisheries, Sports, Youth Affairs and Minister in-charge District Pramod Madhwaraj. He was speaking after inaugurating the newly built hi-tech fish market costing Rs 2.5 core in Udupi here on January 14.
The CMC way back in 2013 had sanctioned the fish market with 70 retail counters in the existing fish market and the fish market was shifted to Beedinagudde as a temporary measure. He recalled his contribution of Rupees 5 lakh in building a temporary fish market in Beedinagudde. The grant for the fish market was released by UPA government in the centre costing Rs 1.8 crores. The fish market due to changes in design and layout took 3 years to complete.
The existing plan facilitated 70 retail counters but the fisherwomen demanded 180 total counters and like wise the modifications have been formulated. The CMC has contributed Rs 39 lakh while the fisheries department has contributed rupees 30 lakh for the construction of the fish market.
A nominal fee will be collected from the fisherwomen to run the fish market which will be decided after consultation with them. He gave a call to the fisherwomen to maintain cleanliness in the fish market to serve the customers effectively. He also said that waste should be effectively segregated rather than dumping in the market premises.
He also thanked all the officials and members for their efforts in completing the fish market within the given time frame.
He later distributed certificates to the fisherwomen.
