The programme was organised by Mangalore Nephro-Urology Charitable Trust (MNCT). Chairman, AJ Group of Institutions, Dr AJ Shetty was to be felicitated on this occasion for being awarded Doctorate by Mangalore University. But due to ill health, Dr AJ Shetty could not attend the function.

Chief Secretary of Kidney Aarogya Samiti, Umar UH welcomed the gathering. Speaking on the occasion, Khader said, “I congratulate MNCT for releasing this documentary. I wanted every Taluk to have a dialysis centre and every district to have a 10-bed dialysis ward. The idea is already being implemented and one Taluk in every district has a dialysis centre. In Mangaluru, the centre is at Puttur.”

He further said, “Dialysis is not the answer to kidney failure, but transplantation is the only solution. Dialysis will only make a person poor due to the high costs involved. Today Karnataka is the only state where BPL card holders can have a transplantation free of cost an APL candidate need to spend only Rs 1.5 lakh for transplantation. As the medicines post-transplantation are a burden, lifelong free drugs will be given to patients in the state.”

He said that the public sector will partner with the private sector to provide facilities. “To make the process of transplantation easy, rules have to be relaxed. Many organs are being wasted and if the system is made easier, then a poor person will not have to wait for 8 years for an organ, but will get it in a matter of 6 months,” Khader said.

“We must keep aside an hour in a day to perform physical activities. It will ensure our fitness. 90% of the people suffering from illnesses have the cure in their own hands, they just need to maintain a good lifestyle,” he added.

Chairman, MNCT, S Ganesh Rao also spoke on the occasion. Chairman, MNCT, Mohammed Saleem, President of Kidney Patients Association, S Prasad and others were also present.
