Minister visits rain-hit areas in D-K; schools closed
Mangaluru: Puttur Assistant Commissioner Krishnamurthy has declared holiday for all schools in Puttur taluk following heavy rainfall in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district. Belthangady and Sullia tahsildars too, have declared a holiday for schools in their respective taluks following copious rainfall.
After a day’s break, heavy rain battered Dakshina Kannada at many places on Thursday. Belthangady, Sullia and Puttur taluks received heavy rain. Motorists faced inconvenience as water flooded the roads. Vehicles waded through knee deep water in Guruvayanakere of Belthangady taluk.
Revenue Minister R V Deshpande is visiting rain affected areas in various parts of DK on Thursday. Visiting the partially damaged houses at Anegundi cross road in Bejai, he disbursed cheques as immediate compensation (amounting to Rs 1,01,900) to each to the families of the victims Bhavani and Anuradha.
Briefing reporters, he said that the district administration has been directed to disburse Rs 5 crore as compensation to aggrieved families.
Commenting on the landslides in Charmadi chat, he said that the traffic on the road was banned to avert disasters. The ghat will be opened for traffic as soon as the debris is cleared, Deshpande added.
The minister will also visit rain affected areas in Udaynagar , Ullal and nearby areas.
The Tunga river is overflowing. About 50 vehicles including a private bus to Mangaluru from Davangere is stranded between DK border and Nemmar. Vehicles will be allowed only after the water level subsides on the stretch.
