MISAL 2024 Begins in Goa with Focus on Christian Love and Crossing New Frontiers
Goa: The International Societies of Apostolic Life (MISAL) has officially commenced its biennial meeting in Pilar, Goa, India, from December 2nd to December 6th, 2024. The theme for this year’s gathering, “Journeying Together: Encountering New Frontiers,” highlights the necessity of collective action and empathy in the pursuit of evangelization. His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing that Christian love transcends all boundaries in the mission to witness Jesus Christ.
During his address, Cardinal Tagle articulated a nuanced understanding of “frontiers” in the context of evangelization and community building. He delineated three primary interpretations of the term. He began by explaining that the first frontier refers to the physical borders that separate different territories, which have civil, historical, cultural, and ethnic implications. Cardinal Tagle emphasized that recognizing these borders is crucial to effectively describe local churches and facilitate the process of inculturation. Drawing on biblical examples, he noted how Jesus traversed various territories, promoting an appreciation for diversity and thereby disentangling Christianity from being tethered to a singular culture.
Further expanding upon this theme, Cardinal Tagle stressed the importance of being mindful of cultural frontiers. He argued that while it is essential to honor the initial boundaries represented by physical borders, neglecting the broader concept of universal frontiers—where Christian love and values transcend divisions—ultimately weakens the Church’s mission. He challenged attendees to ensure that their evangelization efforts do not become confined to merely institutional narratives but extend to embrace the entirety of human experience.
He identified the second frontier as the unexplored niches within society that necessitate missionary work and engagement. The third frontier discussed involved the realm of knowledge, particularly in reference to emerging fields demanding thorough investigation, such as the rise of digital technology and the Church’s ongoing journey toward synodality.
MISAL 2024 is being hosted by the Missionary Society of St. Francis Xavier, known locally as the Society of Pilar. This indigenous Missionary Society of Apostolic Life was established on September 26, 1887, in Goa by Rev. Fr. Bento Martins, and continues to be an influential force in promoting apostolic work in various regions.
Following Cardinal Tagle’s insightful keynote address, a question-and-answer session ensued, moderated by Bishop Sebastião Mascarenhas, the Bishop of Baroda. The session fostered further engagement with key themes and encouraged active dialogue among the attendees.
Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, underscored the pivotal role Societies of Apostolic Life play at the forefront of evangelization efforts. He called upon them to invigorate the Church’s engagement with contemporary synodal challenges, citing exemplary figures such as St. Francis Xavier and St. Joseph Vaz—both saints known for their willingness to cross geographical and cultural frontiers in their pursuit of spreading the Gospel.
In his welcome address, Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, the Archbishop of Goa and Daman, described Societies of Apostolic Life as “a light in the world,” emphasizing their potential to break new ground. He lauded their adaptability and fervent spirit in tackling the challenges faced by the modern Church.
Fr. Nazareth Fernandes, Superior General of the Society of Pilar, expressed heartfelt greetings to the Cardinals, Bishops, and delegates, reiterating the significance of MISAL 2024. He highlighted Pilar as a unique venue that has historically served as a wellspring for missionary strength and inspiration.
As part of the inaugural session, Fr. Norman Almeida SFX extended gratitude towards Cardinal Tagle and Bishop Sebastião Mascarenhas for their valuable contributions to the dialogue and the promotion of the event’s objectives.
The ceremony culminated in a traditional lamp lighting ritual led by Fr. Stephen D’Souza, Vicar General of the Society of Pilar, where dignitaries—including Cardinal Tagle, Archbishop Ferrão, and Archbishop Girelli—illuminated the lamp together, symbolizing the collective commitment to spreading light in the world.
The inaugural ceremony was skillfully anchored by Fr. Randal Dsouza SFX and Sr. Nina Lopes MSP, who facilitated a smooth progression of events.
The conference is witnessing the participation of representatives from 29 Societies of Apostolic Life, bringing together a mosaic of voices and experiences from around the globe. The opening day featured several notable figures including Sr. Faria Barretto HC, Mother General of the Congregation of Handmaids of Christ; Sr. Luiza Fernandes MSP, Mother General of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Pilar; and Fr. Pedro Rodrigues S.J, Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus, among others. Together, they fostered a spirit of unity and shared purpose, essential for collective action in the ecclesial body.
The evening concluded with a public reception honoring the dignitaries and delegates, heralding a promising commencement to MISAL 2024. The program included a musical performance led by Joe D’Costa and a theatrical presentation celebrating the history and development of the Society of Pilar. Moreover, Cardinal Tagle, along with Cardinal Ferrão and Archbishop Girelli, unveiled the book titled “The Social Dynamism of Catholic Education with Special Reference to India,” authored by Dr. Fr. Adrian Fernandes SFX, with Dr. Sr. Dorothy D’Souza AC serving as a project expert. A souvenir commemorating the global meet was also launched during this vibrant evening, which was expertly facilitated by Sammy Coelho and Myra D’Costa.
Looking ahead, MISAL 2024 is poised to empower the members of Societies of Apostolic Life to deepen their commitment, expand their horizons, and respond with both courage and compassion to the evolving needs of the world. The gathering promises to be a significant milestone in the ongoing mission of the Church as it seeks to embody the essence of Christian love across diverse frontiers.
