Mangaluru: In a touching gesture, the Mississippi state authorities have named a street after the Indian-American doctor Dr Sampat Shivangi to recognize his service to the state. The street will henceforth be called as ‘Dr Sampat Shivangi Lane’. In 2014, Shivangi became the first Asian to be appointed as the Chairman of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health in the southern American state. Shivangi also served as the Advisor to the US Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2005-2008.
Shivangi is the previous president and chair of the India Association of Mississippi and is also the founder president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian-origin in Mississippi. This week, the Mississippi state governor Phil Bryant reappointed Shivangi for a second 7-year term to the Board of Mississippi’s department of Mental Health, which plays major part in caring for mentally ill, intellectual developmental disability and drug and alcohol addiction.
Dr Sampat Shivangi, is a 1962-batch alumnus of Kasturba Medical College-Manipal, and after receiving a email from Dr Shivangi to Dr M Ramdas Pai-Chancellor of Manipal University about the news, Dr Pai in his statement has said “We are all glad to note that a street in Mississipi-USA has named a street after Dr Sampat.
