MKCA, USA Celebrates Christmas – 2024

Chicago, IL: The Mangalorean Konkan Christian Association (MKCA) marked a significant milestone by celebrating its 20th annual Christmas Celebration at St. Hubert’s Church Hall in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Known in the Konkani language as Nathal Festh, this event honors the birth of Jesus Christ and is celebrated by Christians around the world on December 25th.

The festivities commenced with a solemn Holy Eucharist, attended by MKCA members and their guests. The first and second readings during the Mass were delivered by MKCA members Dominick Carrabotta and Savio Pais, adding a personal touch to the spiritual observance.

Following the Mass, the cultural program began with a warm welcome from MKCA President Leonard Lobo Shenoy. In his address, he outlined the agenda for the evening and shared insights into the significance of Kuswar, a traditional Christmas sweet, and the customs observed in the greater Mangalorean community in India. President Shenoy expressed gratitude to the members and guests for their unwavering support in making the annual celebration a success. He also thanked Rev. Fr. Tom Abraham, the Parish Priest, for graciously providing the venue, and encouraging feedback for enhancing future programs. Special appreciation was extended to the organizing committee for their dedicated efforts in coordinating the Nathal Festh.

Savio Pais, the event’s compeer and current Secretary of the Association, invited attendees to enjoy an array of ethnic appetizers, which were well-received by all. The evening continued with a variety of engaging activities organized by Savio, catering to children, couples, and adults alike. The children showcased their enthusiasm, while the adults revelled in nostalgic moments. The gathering resonated with the joyful sounds of Christmas carols, culminating in the much-anticipated arrival of Santa Claus, portrayed by Austin D’Souza. His presence delighted the children, who were thrilled to receive Christmas gifts and eagerly posed for photographs.

In his closing remarks, Savio Pais acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the organizing committee and recognized the efforts of all members involved in preparing the Christmas Kuswar, particularly highlighting the leadership of Vice President Charel Alsamurrai.

The celebration concluded with a sumptuous ethnic dinner, where attendees enjoyed a lively atmosphere enhanced by the DJing skills of Queenie Mendonca. Guests danced to a diverse selection of Konkani, Hindi, Kannada, and Spanish songs, ensuring the event was a memorable celebration of community and festivity.

The MKCA’s 20th annual Christmas Celebration not only honored cherished traditions but also strengthened the bonds among its members, reflecting the vibrant spirit of the Mangalorean community in the United States.
