MLAs Fail to Convince CMMA to Shift Fruit and Vegetable Market to APMC

Mangaluru: All of a sudden the district administration decided to shift the fruit and vegetable market from Hampankatta to APMC, Baikampady on April 2. But the wholesale and retail merchants refused to shift from the central market.

In this connection, a meeting was held with the president and the members of the Central Market Merchants Association at the DC office on April 3.

Speaking to mangalorean.com President of Central Market Merchants Association Mustafa said, “Every day I go to the DC office for meetings, but the MLAs nor the district minister in-charge informed me about shifting the market. Without bringing such an issue to our notice, they cannot decide to shift the market wherever they want. If a retail merchant from Talapady wants to take Onion and Potatoes he should come from Talapady to Baikampady. We cannot accept their decision which was taken in a hurry without our knowledge and put the merchants in trouble.”

Mustafa further said, “The vegetable and fruit carrying trucks had already reached the Central Market and the MLAs all of a sudden decided to shift the market to Baikampady. The APMC yard where they want the market to be shifted is not safe or fit for business. Let the administration divide the sale of fruits and vegetables. Let the administration fix alternate days to sell vegetables and fruits. Shifting the market to Baikampady is not the right decision”.

Speaking to mangalorean.com one of the retail vendors said, “Let the district administration restrict the vendors selling outside. Many are selling fruits and vegetables outside the market. Let the administration stop the street vendors. We are paying rent and doing our business legally but there are many illegal street vendors doing business without license or paying the rent. Shifting the market is a nightmare, people will not come to Baikamapdy.”
