MLC Ivan Unveils Sir M Visvesvaraya’s Bust at KPT
Mangaluru: The bust of Sir M Visvesvaraya was unveiled by MLC Ivan D’Souza at the KPT premises here, on June 22.
The unveiling programme began with an invocation. Chancellor Rajendra Prasad welcomed the gathering. Principal Sushila Kumari presided over the function. MLC Ivan D’Souza inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp and garlanding the bust of Sir M Visvesvaraya.
Addressing the gathering, MLC Ivan said that Sir M Visvesvaraya is the maker of modern India and he was instrumental in setting up Polytechnic institutes and industries. He is the architect of Krishnarajasagar Dam. Sir M Visvesvaraya led a very simple life. He was popular for his integrity and honesty. He was also known as the father of Modern Mysuru.
Ivan further said that it was the duty of the government to erect Sir M Visvesvaraya’s bust in the Polytechnic campuses. “But principal Sushila came forward to erect the bust in the college campus by spending Rs 1 lakh. She understood her duty and spent her own earnings. Instead of asking what the society has given us, it is better to ask ourselves what we have given to the society,” he said.
Ivan also said that those who have studies in KPT have earned respect in society. “KPT should be developed and all the facilities should be improved.” He assured to sanction funds for the development of the institution.
Sushila Kumari delivering the presidential address said, “Yes, we receive salary from the government. It not only pays our salary but we also get pension after retirement, which will be useful for our children. It is our duty to give something back to the institution. I thought to do something for the students in the campus. Positive thinking is very much important and I thought of erecting Sir M Visvesvaraya’s bust so that students will be inspired when they see KPT has a heritage building. Instead of erecting fibre bust, I thought of erecting stone bust. I met Dandapani in Karkala in this regard and in 4 months, Dandapani completed the bust.”
Dandapani was felicitated by Ivan D’Souza for carving the bust beautifully. Principal Sushila Kumari was also felicitated.
