Mangaluru ‘Good Samaritans’ show ‘Good Response’ in Aiding Kodagu Flood Victims
Mangaluru: No doubt that Mangaloreans are not only “Friendly”, but “Generous” too- for the fact that residents of Mangaluru have shown tremendous solidarity with the people of Kodagu district affected by recent floods and landslides, by making generous donations of relief materials, after a request was made by the Kodava Students Association {KSA} , during a press meet held on Saturday, 18 August, and the briefing was published in various media, including Mangalorean.com. A collection centre which was set up at SDM Law College, M G Road, Mangaluru has been teeming with activity, with a large number of people donating food items, toiletries, first aid kits, blankets, clothes, and other materials for the flood victims- and the volunteers and members of KSA were seen busy packing up all the items in cardboard boxes, to be shipped by a truck on Tuesday, 21 August morning.
Mangaluru’s has shown that it’s all heart for its not so far Kodagu district and for its brothers and sisters there. Mangaluru has indeed reached out to its neighbouring district with quick and timely help. Local College students studying with their college mates from Kodagu have been at the forefront of organizing flood relief efforts. Some were spotted on the road near SDM College, holding banners and seeking donations for the relief efforts. The students have also spread the word across the City encouraging people to donate.
It is learnt that some students have donated their pocket money to buy the needed relief items, clothes and other emergency supplies. It’s heartening to see all this generosity in the students and the general public. Volunteers are showing that they have hearts of gold as they are working hard towards relief efforts for flood victims. The devastation by floods/landslides in Kodagu districts has unleashed a wave of giving, with Good Samaritans rushing to donate various kinds of items, including non-perishable food items, and also providing shelter, and even financial aid to victims. It’s nice to note that everybody pitches in the minute a disaster occurs. There are amazing outpourings of the generosity of people of Mangaluru volunteering their time.
Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at SDM Law College on Monday, 20 August at 5 pm, Advocate Someyanda P Chengappa, the former president of Mangalore Bar Association and Adviser to KSA said, ” “The response from the public has been good and we will dispatch a truck full of relief material on Tuesday morning, through an alternate route, so that the materials will reach the Kodagu flood victims in time. We are happy to see ordinary kind-hearted Mangalureans and organizations coming forward in such large numbers to donate to flood victims. We have already collected blankets, first-aid kits, packed foods, crockery, under-wears, toiletries, needed important medicines, water, buckets, flashlights, rice, masala powder, condiments/spices, non-perishable food items and other essentials.”
” All the relief supplies will reach the victims by Tuesday night or Wednesday. While voluntary rain relief contributions are being made by citizens, some other institutions like Alva’s College, KMC Mangaluru, and other private firms too are pitching in. We are happy to note that in just two days, Sunday and Monday we have received such a large quantity of relief items. We did this to provide [the victims] some relief, and we are doing the best we can from here. It’s indeed the time of the hour that the generous citizens of Mangaluru and DK have done something towards the people in Kodagu who have been affected by torrential rains, floods and landslides. Our efforts will not stop here. Once the relief items are supplied to the Kodagu people, we will discuss with them and listen to their grievances and will help them rebuild their homes or restart their farming business or other enterprises by giving them financial support. Therefore we have opened a bank account where people can contribute funds directly to the account or mail a cheque. Thank you once again for all your support, and also to the media personnel for spreading the word” added Chengappa.
