Modern Market to Come up in Place of Central Vegetable and Fish Market

Mangaluru: “The corporation market situated in Kasba Bazar known as the Central Vegetable and fish market in two old buildings is in a dilapidated condition and has been declared beyond repair. The corporation has therefore taken steps to demolish the same and construct a new building on modern lines complying with all the requirements to make shopping easy and more congenial for health and sanitation”, stated the commissioner of Mangaluru City corporation Ajithkumar Hegde S, in a press release on April 8.

In his press release Ajithkumar stated, “Further, the present market building is not suitable to comply with the new COVID-19, which requires social distancing to be maintained wherever people gather. This is necessary to keep in mind the overall health and well being of the citizens of the city. Hence considering all these circumstances, the Corporation has already closed the said market”.

Ajithkumar further stated, “No business will be allowed to continue in the said building from now onwards. However, to enable the vendors who were having their business in the said market, if they choose, may approach the APMC yard at Baikampady where they can secure space for doing their business.”

Speaking to mangalorean.com President of Central Market Merchants Association Mustafa said, “We have followed the orders of the district administration and shifted our business to the APMC yard on April 8. But many retailers have purchased goods from us and without buyers are facing severe problems. How the retailers do business in the hot sun if the slots in the APMC yard are not allotted to them? I have spoken to the MLA of Mangaluru North Constituency Dr Bharat Shetty who has assured of looking into the matter and take appropriate action as soon as possible.”

Mustafa further said, “My concern is that, many retailers have been doing their business for more than 30 years and if the district administration suddenly decides to demolish the building where they will go? Before demolishing the building the district administration should serve notices and give enough time to set up their business elsewhere. Without prior information to the vendors and during this critical time closing the shops is not fair.”
