Moily disowns tweet on money in politics
New Delhi: Ahead of the assembly elections, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily’s purported remarks on Twitter slamming “money in politics”, particularly in the selection of candidates, has raised eyebrows
Moily has “disowned the tweet”, but added that party’s internal disputes should not be discussed in public.
“INC needs to solve money in politics. We can’t afford to have road contractors and their nexus with state PWD minister determine how candidates are selected for the upcoming assembly elections,” read a Tweet posted from a Twitter handle claiming to be Moily’s
The remarks, which come on the eve of the AICC Plenary, are strikingly similar to the allegations levelled by another Congress leader Margaret Alva six months after the assembly elections in 2008.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, whose hopes of heading the Karnataka Congress in 2008 had been dashed, had backed Alva and asked the party to probe the allegations.
The party high command launched a swift inquiry into the matter and appeared to have absolved Moily of any wrongdoing.
“I have enquired into the matter. He (Moily) has said he did not do it. We treat the matter closed,” AICC General Secretary in-charge of party affairs in Karnataka K C Venugopal told DH.
The Congress is in the process of selecting candidates for the assembly elections expected to be held in May.
The tweet in question also tagged the Twitter handles of the Congress President Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party, the Karnataka Congress and that of Moily’s son Harsha Moily
Moily rejected suggestions that his son had posted the tweet. “It has not been done by my son,” Moily, a former chief minister, said.
