Mother and son drown in Stone Quarry at Padu Alevoor
Udupi: In a tragic incident a mother and her 4-year-old son fell into a water-filled stone quarry pond at Padu Alevoor here on Tuesday, April 25.
The deceased have been identified Dyamavva (25) and her son Hanumantha (4).
According to the police, Dyamavva and her son Hanumantha had gone to the stone quarry to wash clothes. Hanumantha was playing near the quarry while his mother Dyamavva was washing clothes. Suddenly Hanumantha slipped and fell into the pond. Dyamavva seeing her son fall into the pond jumped into the water to rescue her son, both of them drowned in the deep water.
Dyamavva was the wife of Yamunappa, natives of Aihole of Bagalokete district working as daily wage labourers in Udupi and staying in Padu Alevoor near Dendoorkatte of Moodublle for the last 25 years. Dyamavva and Yamunappa were married 9 years ago.
The incident was immediately reported by the locals to the Manipal Police and fire department who rushed to the spot and started search operations with the help of local swimmers Ashok, Nithin and Prabhakar.
After an hour of the search operations, both bodies were lifted from the pond and sent to the government hospital for postmortem.
Manipal police have registered a case and investigation is on.
