Mother and Daughter Duo from Bantwal ‘Knit’ Their Way into Guinness!

Bantwal: Anuradha Ramaprasad Prabhu, wife of Ramaprasad Prabhu residing here on Tyagaraja road, and her daughter Anusha R Prabhu, have brought honour to this town by being part of a team that knitted a crochet blanket of the largest-ever dimensions in the world recently.

The team was Mother India’s Crochet Queens (India) which successfully made the largest crochet blanket in the world, measuring a whopping 11,148.5 m² (120,001 ft² 72 in²) – easily covering the football pitch of MNM Engineering College in Toraipakkam in Chennai on which it was laid. It is roughly of the expanse of Nehru maidan in Mangaluru, according to the reports.

The Prabhu duo expressed their gratitude to those who helped them in many ways. Although the record-breaking event has taken place over two months ago, they received their official Guinness Book certificates only last week.

The enthusiastic women, including about 200 from Karnataka, formed a group through the Facebook. Working on crochet work for six months, they literally got their act together to beat the previous record set in South Africa.

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator P Patel traveled to Chennai, India to verify the incredible new record.

The brain behind this massive mission was 44-year-old crochet-lover Subashri Natarajan, who says that she had started the wonderful art of crochet from a young age. She recalls that she, as a young girl of 10, kept playing with yarn creating beautiful dreams with crochet.

As she grew up, so did her ambitions of making it big in the world. She always wanted to create an opportunity instead of waiting for one. So she decided to research on Guinness World Records projects related to crochet.

Over 1,000 participants aged eight to 85, from India, as well as 13 other countries, contributed by creating hundreds of 40 x 40 in sections to make one enormous blanket.

Record-breaking crochet tapestries have grown significantly since the title was first achieved in 1999 with a comparatively tiny 23.77 x 8.22 m (78 x 27 ft) creation.

The most recent record was 3,377 m² (36,349.58 ft²), produced by 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day (South Africa) in April 2015 – but the Crochet Queens’ design was more than three times larger.

And the record is likely to remain unbroken for a long time to come unless another group gets on the job on a war-footing with a feverish effort.
