Mouth-watering Delicacies of Tulunadu mark ‘Aatidonji Dina’ in Udupi
Udupi: It was a day to relish mouth-watering delicacies of Tulunadu, to recall the richness of Tuluva culture and to enliven the agricultural activities at Ammanni Ramanna Shetty Auditorium Udupi here on Tuesday, July 18.
‘Atidonji Dina’, a festival of Tuluva culture, food and tradition organised by Udupi Taluk Mahila Mandalagala Okkoota, Buntara Yane Nadavara Mathr Sangha, Kannada and Culture department provided not only glimpses of Tuluva culture to visitors, but also offered delicious food with 21 varieties of Tulunadus own delicacies.
The celebrations introduced one to the old legacy of Tulunadu culture and also helped to experience the pinch of the customs that were practiced during the agricultural activities in the midst of the heavy monsoon.
Women were served ‘pathrode’, ‘Moode’, ‘Arasina Ele Kadabu’, ‘Tejank-Pelathari Uppkari,’ ‘Pelatha Gatti, ‘Kesuvina chutney’, ‘Thimare chutney – Kukkuda chutney’, Hurali Saru’, ‘Chilimbida Adde’, ‘Payasa’, ‘Southe Padengi Gasi’ ‘Uppad Pachir,’ ‘ Halasina Mulka’, ‘Halasina Thole’, Kanile-Kadle Gasi’, ‘Pejakayi chutney’. and other foods were served on the occasion. Later, meals including rice, payasam, rasam and mango pickle of Tulunadu as an additional menu was also served to all.
Earlier the programme was inaugurated by K Jayaprakash Hegde former MP by lighting the lamp. In his message, Hegde said that our ancestors used to practice various traditions. However, these traditions have a scientific rationale. Mouth watering delicacies are prepared during Aati which helps to heal the body, provides nutrition and increases the immunity level. Modernisation is replacing our rich culture.
There is a need to preserve our culture and create awareness about it. Programmes like ‘Aatidonji Dina’ keep the people in touch with their tradition, he said.
Well-known music Director V Manohar was felicitated on the occasion. In his message, Manohar said that Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts were known for culture. These days children prefer eating fast food and they are strangers to the traditional delicacies. Changes are inevitable, however, the responsibilities lie on the people to preserve the culture and tradition. It is necessary to make children know about the ancient customs and rituals by organising these sorts of programmes, he added.
Vidyalatha Udaykumar Shetty, Girija Talur Shivaram Shetty, Sheela K Shetty, Yashodha J Shetty, Mamatha Sudhakar Shetty and others were present on the occasion.
