New Delhi, April 28 (IANS) A demand was made in the Lok Sabha on Thursday for world class training facilities for Dipa Karmakar, who recently created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics.
Apna Dal MP Anupriya Patel made the demand in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour.
“Being the first women gymnast to qualify for Olympics, Dipa Karmakar has made the whole country proud especially the women. I urge the government to provide her adequate world class training facilities so that she can make the country proud by winning a medal,” Patel said.
Hailing the efforts of Dipa Karmakar, Patel also took on sports bodies for not providing adequate support to her.
“Dipa achieved this feat not due to the efforts of any government or any sports body. It was due to her personal efforts and dedication,” she said.
Karmakar booked her place at the Rio Games after putting up a strong show in the final qualifying and test event.
Her journey from humble beginnings in her hometown of Agartala is testimony to her hard work and determination.
The daughter of a weightlifting coach at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Agartala, Dipa took to gymnastics at the tender age of six.
Presently, she is trained by coach Bisbeshwar Nandi.
