Udupi: Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje on Wednesday, May 30 visited the rain-hit areas of Udupi, Kaup and Padubidri to inspect the situation and assess the damage.
She was accompanied by Zilla Panchayat member Githanjali Suvarna, Udupi district BJP president Mattar Rathnakar Hegde and other leaders.
She visited Kalsanka, Rajangana parking area, Bailakere, Kaup, Padubidiri and other areas. She also visited nine-year-old Nidhi Acharya’s house, who was washed away in a flash flood in Padubidri and consoled the family members.
Later speaking to the media persons, Shobha said that Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have received heavy and incessant rain from the last two days. For the first time in history, such huge losses have been reported in Udupi district. In the two days of rain, hundreds of huge trees were uprooted and thousands of electric poles were damaged in the district. The rain coupled with stormy wind, caused huge damages with a number of houses collapsing, damage to the cattle sheds and arecanut fields. Four persons lost their lives in both districts.
“A nine-year-old schoolgirl, Nidhi Acharya, was killed in Padubidri and a gram panchayat member Sheela was also killed in a lightning strike in Karkala. I have instructed the deputy commissioner to ensure all possible assistance in rain-affected areas,” said Karandlaje.
She further said, “In Karnataka, there is no government. The chief minister and the deputy chief minister are handling all portfolios. For 15 days, all the MLAs were involved in the resort politics. They have now left the resort and gone to New Delhi to lobby for ministers post. All the Congress and JDS MLAs are busy trying to get the ministers post. Officials should take the initiative and release compensation for the people who have lost their property and houses in the rain.”
