Mr N. Vinaya Hegde – Mangalorean Star
N Vinaya Hegde is the Second Son of Late Justice K S Hegde, Former Justice of Supreme Court of India and Former Speaker of Lok Sabha. His Mother, Late Mrs. Meenakshi Hegde, who belonged to Nitte Village.
Born on 3rd April 1939, N Vinaya Hegde attended St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore, and a Science Graduate from St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore. Justice Kwadoor Sadananda Hegde settled in Nitte village after retirement from active politics and this decision motivated Mr. Vinaya Hegde to get involved in his native village Nitte, by the sincere concern Justice K S Hegde had for the rural people which resulted in founding Nitte Education Trust with a High School in the year 1979.
Mr. Vinaya Hegde’s father, Late K.S. Hegde, was born in Kowdoor Village and had his early education at Karkala and Mangalore, later a degree in Law from the Government Law College, Madras. He Began his legal practice at Karkala in 1936 and later moved to Mangalore, where he was appointed public prosecutor of South Canara district in 1948. He was elected member of the First Council of states, now known as the Rajya Sabha.
In 1954, he represented India at the General Assembly of the United Nations. He then became a judge of the Mysore High Court. In 1966, he was appointed the first Chief Justice of the Delhi and Himachal Pradesh High Court. He held this office till he was elevated to the post of judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1967. However, he resigned this office in 1973, in protest against the supersession of senior judges in the appointment of the Chief Justice of India. In 1977, Justice K.S.Hegde was elected to the Lok Sabha and later was appointed Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He held this office till 1980. After a distinguished career, he retired from public life and settled at Nitte, only to relentlessly work for the upliftment and empowerment of the rural people. Justice K.S. Hegde passed away on May25, 1990.
Presently Nitte Education Trust has 22 educational institutions, more than 8000 students and employs around 3,000 people (including teaching & non teaching). Each is a self-contained campus with a temple, post office, bank and separate hostels for men and women, with staff wardens, good playgrounds and 24-hour telephone and the Internet facilities.

The trust also manages a 600 bedded Multi Speciality Hospital at Deralakatte. WELFARE ACTIVITIES OF NITTE EDUCATION TRUST
The Medical and Dental centre at the Nitte campus, offers free treatment to approximately 140 patient’s everyday. Free specialist services in general medicine, Paediatrics, orthopaedics, surgery, ophthalmology and obstetrics and gynaecology are provided. Weekly immunization camps in the village are conducted. The patients requiring inpatients care are sent to the Turst’s hospital at Mangalore. The patients are given free treatment, food and transport. A comprehensive plant for preventive and curative care to effectively eradicate communicable diseases like Tuberculosis and Malaria has been implemented. Wherever HIV patients are identified, a rehabilitation program is taken up immediately.
During the last 2 years more than 2000 Cleft lip surgeries have been made in association with Smile Association, USA and International Cleft-lip and Palate Foundation, Germany. The treatment including correction of speech and orthodontics and also the cost of food and medicine is totally free.
The mission of total health care is extended to the remote villages of Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur, Uttar Kannada and Udupi districts through 12 satellites health centers which provide free medical and dental treatments.
The Trust has implemented a school support system in the Udupi and Dakshina Kannad districts with basic education to rural children. The scheme includes construction of school building and classrooms, appointment of support teachers, providing teaching and sports materials, uniforms, scholarships on merit-cum means basis, and sponsoring rural athletes to participate in National and International tournaments.
The Trust has so far sunk 7 wells at various localities and is maintained to provide drinking water in the village.
Through the community polytechnic scheme (with the support from the Ministry of HRD, Govt of India) mechanic training is imparted to a number of youth. Dressmaking and Tailoring skills are imparted to women who are then encouraged to buy sewing machines, with the help of subsidy provided by the Trust. Many girls have been encouraged to take up nursing courses in colleges, where education and hostel facilities are provided free of cost.
The foundry established by the promoters, provides employment to a large number of whom are from the nearby villages. The Mahila Udyog Mandal started to encourage and support women entrepreneurs, runs a printing press a canteen and manufactures hygiene products and handicrafts providing employment to number of women in the village.
Two orphanages are managed by the Trust, where adoptions are made and their schooling is looked after by the Trust.
A comprehensive database of all the 1700 households of the village has been developed, which gives an exhaustive profile of the families, with respect to all the demographic features, family status, land ownership, occupation, income, health, sanitation etc. with the help of this database community development programs have been planned and implemented.
Mr. Vinaya Hegde also spearheads Lamina Group of Industries, which has a turnover in excess of Rs. 100 crores, employing more than 2,000 people. The group has a export turnover in excess of Rs. 60 crores to countries like Germany, U.S.A, U.K, Korea, Finland, Belgium and others. The flagship company Lamina Suspension Products Ltd, which was founded in the year 1976, manufacturing Automobile Leaf Springs with large export turnover. The group is into manufacturing automobile spare parts like Leaf Springs, Brake Drums and other accessories. Under his able leadership, the company has bagged the following awards:
• The National Award for Quality – 1987
• The International Gold Star Award for quality Awarded by Business Initiative Directions (BIDS) from U.S.A. – 1995.
• ISO 9002 Certification – 1997.
Mr. Vinaya Hegde was the Chief Promoter of Marmagoa Steels Limited, a Mini Steel Plant set up at Margao, Goa, in 1989. He was former Chairman of CII, Mangalore Chapter and was nominated by the Government of Karnataka as Industrial Representative in the Governing Council of KREC, Surathkal, (now NITK) and held this office till the institution was elevated as National Institute of Technology. He was appointed by the Government of Karnataka as Chairman of Coastal Agenda Task Force, constituted for drafting long term plan for the comprehensive development of the Coastal Districts. He is also a former Chairman of Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, by HRD Ministry of Govt. of India, member of Mangalore University Syndicate and Academic Council, and a member of Governing Council of Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal.
He is the recipient of the following awards:
• Udyoga Pathra Award from Institute of Trade and Industrial Development, New Delhi in the year 1980.
• Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry Award in the year 1999.
• Outstanding Manager of Dakshina Kannada & Udupi Districts Award for the year 1999.
• Best Public Relation Person Award in the year 2001.
Mr. Vinaya Hegde is married to Mrs. Sujatha Hegde and together they have 2 kids, Daughter – Mrs. Ashwitha Punja, MDS, Practicing in Mumbai, Son – Mr. Vishal Hegde, Director in Lamina Group.
Mr. Vinaya Hedge’s hobbies include – Cricket & other sports, social work, devotional songs, and travel.
Mr. Vinaya Hegde has been greatly motivated by his father, Justice K S Hegde. His simplicity, commitment to empower rural India by providing quality technical education motivated Mr. Vinaya hegde to launch Nitte Education Trust in Rural Part of Coastal Karnataka.
Today Justice K.S.Hegde is not just a mere memory lingering in the college. That is not how any of his successors wanted it to be. He lives in every part of the institution.
Following his death, Justice K.S.Hegde’s successors have sought to crystallize his noble ideals through the formation of the Justice K.S.Hegde Foundation. This dream took the shape of reality on his second death anniversary, the ceremony duly inaugurated by Mr.N.A.Palkhiwala.
The Institute’s desire to acknowledge and give credit to those of outstanding merit and to encourage more and more to become of the same gave birth to the Justice K.S.Hegde Foundation Award, 1991. This prestigious award carrying a citation, silver salver and cash awards is presented annually to outstanding personalities in various fields.
Luminaries who have received the award include:
• Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth (1993) – for literature, fine arts and environment conservation.
• Ms. Medha Patkar (1994) – for her incessant struggle for environment conservation
• Mr. Arun Shourie(1995) – for his meritorious contribution to the field of jouralism
• Dr. Manmohan Singh(1996) – for his contribution towards economic reforms in India
• Dr. Prakash Amte & Dr. (Mrs.) Mandakini Amte(1998) – for thier contribution towards social uplift of MADA adivasis of Nagpur.
