Mr. Sarvotham Shetty – Mangalorean Star

Mangalorean.com is very pleased to introduce the star of the month of May, an individual who was instrumental for the formation of Karnataka Association (Auh), Bunts Association & Tulu Koota in the United Arab Emirates and strived for the smooth functioning of these Associations for the last 28 years. A well known face in the UAE is none other than Sri. Sarvotham Shetty – a man with a passion for cultural activities. As his name suggests he is “Sarvaralli Uttama”. His down to earth life style, crystal clear communication skills, authoritarian look and the hidden talents in art, culture, and drama has made him a leader who commands respects by his deeds in Arabian Gulf.

Sarvotham was born and brought up in a tiny hamlet of Pareekha in the district of Udupi near Manipal. After his Pre-University education in Perdoor & Hiriyadka, Mr. Shetty moved to Mumbai and toiled in a hotel to earn his livelihood. Thereafter, he worked in a Solicitor’s office for some time. His “earn and learn” motto got him a Government Commercial Diploma from Bombay University and later continued his education in R.A.Podar College of Commerce & Economics, Mumbai and received the B.Com degree in 1978. Active in Students Union, he represented R.A.Podar College as a Student Representative to the Senate of the University of Bombay in 1977.

After a brief stint in a Pharmaceutical Company, he joined Syndicate Bank in 1970, where he honed his skills in Banking and Finance. As a youngster, his love for dramatics inspired him to take part in Inter Collegiate Drama Competitions and carve a niche for himself in the arena of dramatics and arts. During his college days he received warm tributes for his memorable performance in a play called “Haggada Kone” written by well known writer Parvathavani’ and thus etched a name for himself in the world of Kannada arts.

In 1979, with the co-operation of his friends, he founded “KALAJAGATHU” and had a privilege to be its founder, President. ‘Kalajagatthu’ went on to become a well-known cultural Forum of Mumbai, which even to this day promotes Kannada & Tulu theatrical play’s in Mumbai.

It was then that his life took a significant turn. A leading business house of UAE; International Distribution Establishment of Abu Dhabi invited him to join them to a key position. He was called upon to discharge multifarious responsibilities, which he fulfilled with all the zeal and sincerity for which he is so famous for. He has served as a General Manager for 25 years in International Distribution Establishment and presently he is managing his own business in the UAE capital.

With wife Usha, Son Samarth & Daughter Samyuktha

In addition to his responsibilities at work, in his spare hours he went out to get connected socially and once again began his real interest of building platform for the fellow community members to meet, greet and share the traditional bond of friendship and hidden talents in them. Thus born Karnataka Sangha Abu Dhabi, UAE Bunts Sangha & U.A.E.Tulukoota and Mr.Sarvotham is the President of these cultural Forums.

It was a great moment for Kannadigas of the Emirates, when Sri. Sarvotham Shetty became the first Kannadiga to be elected as the President of India Social Center (ISC) for the year 1999-2000. ISC is a premier Indian Association in the Gulf & he remains the only person to be elected unanimously in the 45 years history of this official organization. He created history again when he was once again elected as the President of ISC in 2002-03. In an earlier stint he was the Vice-President during the year 1995-96. Mr. Shetty was also the founder Vice-President of Toastmaster International Abu Dhabi Chapter and he became a CTM.

Since 1997, Mr. Shetty is the Member of Board of Governors of the prestigious Abu Dhabi Indian School, Abu Dhabi, which is the leading School in the entire Gulf with CBSE Syllabus with over 5000 students. Being a board member, he is also the Sports Coordinator of the school and has served the community relentlessly in shaping up the children by inculcating discipline and leadership.

It is a matter of pride to mention here that Sri. Sarvotham Shetty was instrumental in introducing the game of ladies Throw Ball in UAE through the Bunts and Kannada Associations. This heralded a new sport in the Gulf which now has become a household name and is very popular.

The culmination of all his social work and the leadership quality in bringing the Kannadigas of the Emirates together, resulted in the greatest moment of his life in 1998 when the Govt of Karnataka conferred on him “Karnataka Rajyotsava Award” under the category of ‘Horananda Kannadiga’ for his contribution in the development of Kannada Arts and Culture in foreign land.

Sri. Sarvotham Shetty is a happy family man with a loving and supportive wife Usha and lovable kids Samarth and Samyuktha. Samarth is doing his Mechanical Engineering (8th Semestar) in Bangalore Institue of Technology, Bangalore and daughter – Samyuktha is doing her Instrumentation Technology (2nd Semestar) in Bangalore Institute of Technology, Bangalore.

Sister Saroja is married and her husband doing Hotel Business in Mumbai and sister Shoba is married and her husband doing Hotel Business in Mumbai

His hobbies are: collecting addresses, telephone numbers & E-mail addresses of people and keeping contact with them he says. He is also a social worker and great humanitarian who love to help the poor and needy.

A dramatist, sports lover, educationist, a founder cum organizer of Kannada & Tulu cultural activities, a worshipper of ‘Kannada Matha’ all rolled into one; Sri Sarvotham Shetty is an asset to Gulf Kanndigas and we pray Almighty Lord to give him strength and inspiration to continue to serve and uphold the Karatnaka tradition & culture in this part of the world.

A brief Synopsis of his interview:

M.com: Since you are residing in UAE for more than two and a half decades do you have any special incidents that are worth sharing?

Ans: Living in UAE has been a great experience in itself, where you get surprises everyday. Having lived in this country for more than a quarter century; I have seen this place grow from an ordinary gulf country with hardly any business activities, to a country which can be now called, a financial hub of the world.

Personally this country has given me self growth, both mentally and financially. I came here in the year 1979, with nothing much to say as my own, but today whatever I am is because of this country and its people who have helped me to achieve and excel, and I feel really proud of these achievements.

M.com: Would you like to share any special incident in your life that made you feel realy nice deep within?

Ans: There are many instances which have given me a lot of self satisfaction. Having been actively associated with various social organisations; I had the opportunity to meet various personalities – unknown to well known, cultural ambassadors of our country to the President of India. Each and every one has left behind an unforgettable memory and have made an impact on my mind.

I am basically a lover of art and culture of my state in particular and my country as a whole. Promoting the rich culture of my state and the diversity of my motherland, which is full of moral values, to people spread around, irrespective of where I am, is my main goal and ambition in life. By the grace of GOD, Karnataka Rajyotsava Award – 1998 which was given by the Karnataka State Government came as a pleasant surprise and made me more responsible and strengthened my character and bonding with the State I belong to.

M.com: If you had to meet one good world famous personality whom would you like to visit and why?

Ans: I would personally like to meet Mr. Nelson Mandela if I get an opportunity. He is my inspiration, who has gracefully given up his powers and even today leading a simple & normal life. I was attracted by his philanthropic work, noble messages through his simplicity & leadership. I wanted to inculcate and practice such virtues. I really don’t know to what extent, I can achieve the same but trying to do so itself is a great experience which I enjoy the most.

M.com: What is the nicest gift a leader can give his followers?

Ans: The nicest gift a leader can give is to practice what is being conveyed, and be honest. A leader should possess traits like effective communication, co-ordination, togetherness, team work, getting results and enjoying success together as one team.

M.com: Can you brief us on your success behind promoting the culture in foreign country and how was it possible?

Ans: Right from childhood, I am actively involved in various cultural activates and theatres. It is more of a habit than necessity. This habit forced me to organise various types of cultural activities in Bombay and now in UAE. For me a cultural organisation is a means of self-development and to meet new people. Further, this type of platform helps many people to exhibit their talents. My idea of promoting is mainly to bring people together and promote Indian culture. I strongly believe in the motto of our country – “Unity in Diversity”.

I am really indebted to Dr B.R.Shetty, MD & CEO of New Medical Centre Group, for his moral support & encouragement. I don’t think I would have been able to carry out the various cultural and other social activities without his blessings.

M.com: Nowadays, there are many organizations are emerging in the name of culture in far away lands. Being the main and initial promoter of the Karnataka culture in a foreign country, What does it take to make it successful and how do you keep the organizations active.

Ans: Team work is the ‘key manthra’ to achieve success in any association or organisation. The core committee members should have a clear objective before it starts functioning. Meticulous planning and making your associates realise their responsibilities will help you achieve the objectives and goals you have in your mind. There should be a clear message conveyed to the audience and listeners through all the activities which your organization conducts. This will set an example to other sister organisations. Leaders can come and go but policies should continue.

M.com: What is the message you would like to give to the viewers of m.com?

Ans: My day always starts with Mangalorean.com, which reminds me of my homeland everyday. It keeps me updated on the happenings of our State almost on an hourly basis. I wish that Mangalorean.com will blossom into much bigger & popular news agency. My best wishes to all the readers of Mangalorean.com.

Special Statement:

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the support, that I have received from my ex-employer M/s.International Distribution Est., Abu Dhabi and its staff owned by Mr.Ali Dhieb & Mr.Ahmed A.Al Fardan.

Mangalorean.com wishes Mr Sarvotham Shetty all the very best in his future endeavours.

We at Maharashtra Mandal Abu Dhabi are very proud to have know and closey associated with Shri. Sarvottam Shetty. We wish him all the succes and good health in future.

Gurudas Pai, UAE:
I have known Mr Sarvottam Shetty for a very short time. But during this short time me and my family have been admiring his selfless sense of dedication and service to the expatriate community of this region.

Our Mr Sarvottam Shetty, deserves much more than what is said and spoken. We can find him behind all the cultural activities and initiates efforts to locate and get renowned personalities to this Arab world. He does it himself for the good of all the people here.

We the residents should at least reciprocate by attending the functions organized by the associations in large numbers. One can certainly feel the pain and hurt in his eyes and heart when on certain occasions the attendance and turnout is poor. The least we can reciprocate for his efforts, is by attending such functions in large numbers.

I, on my behalf and on behalf of my family, wish him and his family Good Health, Prosperity and Success in all his efforts.

I deem that my long standing association with this vibrant personality is a rare privilege bestowed on me and I shall cherish it throughout my life. Since 1985 when I took up community service as a passion and pastime I have been witnessing, admiring, practicing and following his footsteps in all the activities I undertook over the years. He is a leader par excellence and he leads by exemplary deeds. He wholeheartedly guides and supports every Karnataka cultural and literary activities in the Emirates without any reservation. This in a way is a great inspiration and moral booster for the newcomer volunteers who would like to serve the Kannada cause as a pastime.

All these days I resisted my craving to pen this feelings of mine because I was afraid I may end up writing an essay! Such is his sheer influence on the society and friends which is the culmination of his innumerable pure good deeds which has been elucidated in this article.

I adore him, respect him and love him and I through this column wish Sri. Sarvotham Shetty and his family all the happiness, prosperity, peace and many more accolades, so that the generation to come will be inspired by such a person with extraordinary talent and selfless motive in his leadership.

Congratulations dad!!!!! A very sincere person with dedication n determination for which only the sky is the limit. Very selfless and unconditional in his deeds, very respectful n courteous to anyone who approaches him and always ready to help people in need. He has been a wonderful father and even better a role model though some of the kids i grew up with called him Hitler, anger is at the tip of his nose and trust me you do not want to get on that side of him. All in all a wonderful person, so dad keep up the good work.

Sudhir Kunder, UAE:
Tons of congratulation Mr. Sarvathom Shetty. Winning the Mangalore Star award proves your ability that you are the star in the heart of the Mangalorean. You are very down to earth person and this I can vouch for with real time experience during my first interaction with you at the Throw ball match at the ADIS Abu Dhabi.
Well, lots can said about you, but words just cant fill the space as your action speaks by itself.
May God give you more energy to be what you are and continue making us Mangalorean proud ever.
More Power and Good luck. God Bless.

Sarvotham Shetty, UAE:
Dearest well wishers,

First of all my sincer thanks to M/s.Roshan D’Souza (Washingon), Queenie (Chicago), Claude Fernandes (Abu Dhabi), Thomas Sequiera, Violet, Lancy D’Souza, George D’Souza, Christopher D’Cunha, Satish Ullal, Una Sabarwal and entire team of www.mangalorean.com for featuring me as “Mangalorean Star” for the month May, 2008.

I am indeed overwhelmed by the torrential heap of good wishes, nonplussed by your vibrant responses and paralysed for finding the right words to convey my heartfelt feelings. I mean each and every word of my inept reply. I would like to keep all of these and direct those inspiring words that made me exuberant like a child.

Such was your love for me that today, I would not be counting the bountiful blessings every minute of the day for the past so many days. It has been an undescribable experience that I wish continues on for ever. I also pray God that he gives me strength to be able to do better whatever little I am doing under the enabling milieu that you all provide me. I do not know whether I should thank you all for I would like to assume all our relationship is a part of our indivisble personalities. I would like to be selfish in refraining from thanking you for your kind words. However I would like to count my myriad blessings that I have such a meaningful existence amongst you all.

With best wishes to one and all,
