Mangaluru: To mark Mother’s day, Pathway Mangalore in association with Mercy Ladies Salon organized the first ever Women’s Cricket Championship 2018 at the Urwa Grounds here, on June 3.

The programme began with a welcome by the founder of Pathway, Deepak Gangolli. One minute of silence was observed for the departed soul of Pathway member Hemanth.

Addressing the gathering, Proprietor of Mangalorean.com Violet Pereira said, “In this present world, women are not being evenly recognised for their work. But today Pathway Mangaluru has recognized the sacrifices and the good work done by women for the society. Pathway has organized a Cricket tournament for the first time in Mangaluru especially for women so that they can exhibit their talents.”

Violet further said, “Winning and losing is part of the game and one should not be disheartened if they lose. Instead, they should consider losing as a step towards success. For those who win will also face challenges and will have to work hard to keep winning. So I urge all the players to play with a sportive spirit and enjoy the tournament. I wish all the players as well as the organizers all the success.”

Speaking on the occasion, Project Manager of CARDTS Samvedana Jayalalitha S Amin said, “Today most of the working women are here to participate in the Cricket tournament. Working women get free time only on Sundays and most of us keep ourselves busy in preparing special food for our family members. But today, you have kept all your work aside and come here to play cricket which is a great achievement. I wish all the 8 teams best of luck. You all are winners. Let Pathway organize many more such programmes.”

Addressing the players, Mrs Asia and Mrs India 2015, and also the organizer and Director of Mrs India, Pratibha Saunshimath said, “In Karnataka, only state-level cricket was played but inter-collegiate cricket started for the first time in Bengaluru in 1986-87. When the organizers invited me as a guest today, I wholeheartedly accepted the invitation because I have played cricket. From my childhood, I had been playing cricket and have played it at the intercollegiate level. But I was unable to play state-level cricket because I got married and could not make it. If you want to truly enjoy cricket, you have to watch and experience a live match. Keep the spirit alive and keep the energy high. I wish you all the best. Let the best win.”

President of JCI and ‘Mrs Popular’ at ‘Mrs India Worldwide 2017’ Pageant Soujanya Hegde and former Brand Ambassador of National-level Lagori Tournament 2018 Sanjana also spoke on the occasion.

On behalf of Ruth Pereira and Orpha Suares, Violet Pereira announced to hand over a cheque of Rs 20,000 to the Project Manager of CARDTS Samvedana Jayalalitha S Amin through Fathima Educational Trust.

Organizer Mercy delivered the vote of thanks. The 8 Women’s Cricket teams participating in the tournament are:

  • Queens XI Kudla
  • Wonder Girls of Tulunadu
  • Kudla Rockers
  • Pink Panthers
  • Mangala Sports
  • MW Warriors
