Udupi: The Mangalore University Inter Collegiate 36th Athletic Meet -2016 and the Differently Abled Sports Meet for children began with a colourful note at the Mahatma Gandhi district Stadium Ajjarkad Udupi on October 7.
Shobha Karandlaje member of Parliament Udupi-Chikkamagaluru inaugurated the Athletic Meet by releasing the Tri-colour balloons in the air.
Addressing the gathering Karandlaje said that sports have always been a major influence in the overall education of a student. Not many of us realize the value of sports. The majority of people see sports as a form of physical activity, and most of us never recognise its importance in education. In fact, most of the parents think that a sport is a form of physical distraction that keeps children away from their academic goals. In reality, sports play a great role in advancing education and enhancing knowledge, ensuring overall development of the child.
India needs to be realistic in its preparation for the Olympics and other games and should narrow its focus to encourage sportspersons at the ground level. We should learn to recognise our local sportspersons and it will be helpful for them to come forward in sports in the coming days, she added.
Lokesh Registrar of Mangalore University said that as many as 70 colleges were coming under the Mangalore University limits. The University is supporting the sports persons in a many ways. The university is awarding 18% of grace marks to undergraduate and postgraduate students. To promote sports talent, the university scholarships were given to undergraduate students, he said.
