Mulki: The annual festival of Shri Durgaparameshwari temple in Bappanadu here was held successfully like every year last week.

Thousands of devotees gathered, offered prayers and gave donations in fulfilment of vows over the days. When the collections in the alms boxes were counted earlier this week, the persons in charge were in for a surprise.

Attached to a small contribution in currency was a letter from a female SSLC candidate addressed to the deity.

Normally, devotees give a contribution after the favours sought are granted. But in this case, the girl has sought the divine intervention in seeing to it that she not only passed in the SSLC examinations but also secured distinction.

She has frantically appealed to the deity to grant her wish and protect her family. She has added an apology saying that this step was not her own idea, but she had been prompted by others to try this method. Should it be an indiscretion by chance, she wrote, she sought pardon from the female deity.

Those in the counting process wished her all success.

Strange are the ways of the devotees!
