City Fire Brigade Chief Sunil Nesrikar and Deputy Chief Fire Officer Sudhir G Amin had sustained serious injuries after a portion of a building collapsed on them during a firefighting operation. Nesrikar is under treatment at the NBC.
The four-storey Gokul Niwas building is located on the congested Kalbadevi lane. Two families were living on the top floor of the building and rest of the building housed a garment shop and a godown. On Saturday, a fire broke in the electric meter box of the building and spread to the entire building. Four of the building’s residents, including a senior citizen and a toddler, escaped unhurt as firemen helped them jump from the terrace of the building to that of an adjoining one.
More than 25 fire engines were pressed into service. The fire officials expected the building to collapse anytime and instructed firemen involved in the operation to keep a safe distance from the building. The victim fire officials were examining the burning building structure standing close to its entry gate to decide further course of action when a portion of the building collapsed on them. The officials were buried in the debris. Firemen managed to removed Nesrikar and Amin after few minutes. But, Rane and Desai were trapped. After struggling for a couple of hours, they found the two officers dead under the debris.
Nitte, Dadddodi Sudhir Gopal G Amin is survived by wife Sharmila, son Yashas and daughter Pranavi. He was an upright officer and was liked by colleagues. He was always willing to lead from the front.
Tulu-Kannadiga Fire officer Amin has saved more than 100 people (including foreigners) during 26/11 Taj attack. He has received many awards including the National award.
The Governor of Maharashtra and the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is on a three-day China tour with the Prime Minister, have sent their condolences to the family.
