Mangaluru: Goa’s rich cultural heritage comprises of dances, folk songs, visual arts, music and folk tales rich in content and variety. Goan are born music lovers, most Goans can pluck at a guitar or pick out a tune on the piano. Music is in the blood of Goans since time immemorial, in almost every family you would find a pianist or a guitarist. Being a part of the culture, music of Goa is a blend of east and west. While the rural areas still stick to the traditional forms of music, the urban areas have shifted to a more modern version. You would get every music from Portuguese to Techno and rave, but what has caught Goa these days is the Goa Trance.

A lot has been inherited from Portuguese in the form of attire which is western including skirts worn by women. Be it the western music including jazz, techno as well as western classic or western cuisines including the amazing sea food, everything in cultural Goa has great western influence. People here are extremely modern and have their inclination towards contemporary advancements. Ever since the Portuguese left Goa, Goa has turned itself to being one of the most westernized and dashing places in India, which is much frequented and loved by tourists from across the world.

The almost forgotten folk dances Dhalo, Fugdi, Corridinho, Mando and performing folk arts (like Khell-Tiatro), Jagar-perani and many others have come out into their own. The most popular Goan Mando refers to the various love songs that are enriched by capturing each and every emotion. These are folk songs that came into existence with the Goan aristocracy. The starting of these songs reflect the sad state of mind but the rhythm they acquire in the end is named as dulpod. A blend of Indian and Western traditions can be found in these songs. The contemporary songs belonging to this category present varied and distinct emotions and therefore, they are different from the old compositions such as bhajan, arti, dasarwadem, etc.

And no doubt that Goa’s cultural richness and vividness is well reflected through Goan folk dances, Goan folk culture and especially Goan songs and music. No matter which part of the world Goans are, they are ready to unleash their music talents. And here we have over 200 Goan Musicians and volunteers who have come together from across the world for a Virtual Choir Performance. They’ve reached out to each other and connected through this virtual performance, a short medley of Kinkani, English and Portugues songs- which includes Goa’s singing sensation Remo’s – .”Maria Petache’ song. Watch the video and enjoy Goa’s traditional music. Viva Re Goa!
