While talking about young writers, many scribes between the age of 10-17, that have been seeking nontraditional ways to share their written word with the world, and here we have our own daughter of the soil, ‘Kodiyalche Chedu’ Kiana, who is aspiring to be a acclaim writer someday, and Her dream is to meet J.K Rowling one day and ask a few interesting questions, which she has already made up in her mind. Surely, there is big scope for young Kiana, since it seems that self-publishing companies, outlets already increasingly popular with adult authors, are inspiring more children and teens to sell their tomes online, allowing them to bypass the traditional gate keeping system for determining who can call himself a ‘published author.’ Some writers are scoffing at the idea. There are no prodigies in literature. Literature requires experience, in a way that mathematics and music do not.
This young genius who was prone to fits of fantasy and solitude, had began writing stories at very young age. As an avid reader for many years, and now a writer, with creativity and imagination, she wants her readers to be able to connect with her stories. Kiana’s dad Kiran Saldanha, who moved to Chennai from Kundapur in 2009, presently works for BASF Catalysts India Pvt. Ltd in Chennai, and her mother, Sheetal Lydia Saldanha, is a Home Maker. Kiana has a cute 1-year-old baby brother, Kristof Laurence Saldanha. Growing up in Chennai, Kiana is an excellent orator, and had reached international level in spell bee contest every year. She has also won in many events in inter school level story telling, fancy dress competitions. She loves singing, playing Keyboard, good in western dance and drawing, bakes cakes with her mom and playing Monopoly with her parents is her favourite pass time .
Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Kiana’s dad Kiran said, “This journey of our daughter as an author started with writing short stories and sharing with her friends. This didn’t stop here and now she has finally come up with her first book “Hope diamond adventure” of the long series she is planning to write “The Mysterious Eight”. She is a big fan of J K Rowling, Carolyn Keene and Enid Blyton. You can see their inspiration in her writings. Her reading habit started when she won her first book when she was in lower KG and it never stopped. Her love for books started with fairy tales and now she is reading a lot many books on mystery, adventure and fiction. As Parents we spend lot of time encouraging her talent and sharpening her skills. She is equally good in her academics. She is the favourite of her teachers and they encourage her a lot. This was her childhood dream to become an author and we as parents, family members and friends helped her achieving this feat”.
Yes, the world is changing — it’s possible for anyone to do almost anything they set their minds to, and young Kiana is a perfect example. Publishing could be great fun for young children/youth, because part of writing is living and exploring the world and interacting with the world, and to get that good feeling inside that you’ve achieved and done something. Today, a 10-year-old author has as good a chance of creating a following as a 50-year-old author, and maybe a better chance because they understand the nuances of social media.
Sources reveal that the discipline of writing regularly is one of the most valuable habits a writer can develop. It strengthens writing, compels creativity, promotes problem-solving and self-criticism, and teaches perseverance and patience. It’s the monotonous (and unglamorous) rhythm of writing over and over again that serves as a catalyst for shaping strong, long-term writers. You want to be a writer? Then you’ve got to write. Great writers write consistently. They’ve learned that writing is a discipline. To all you young ages out there, take up writing, and be just another Kiana Philow Saldanha!
So here we have a young writer in Kiana, who is a heroine for the young ages, one who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. In conclusion, in my perspective, to all those young ages out there follow in the footsteps of Kiana by taking writing seriously as a young person can turn into a career path. But it can also serve as a launching pad into seemingly unrelated fields. Just look at Kiana, a young budding author featured here. So if you decide to make writing a passion more than a hobby, take your writing seriously. It can take you anywhere. Even if you don’t make writing books your career. On the first day of her book published, nearly 500 people read it online, since hard copy is not available right now. Best of luck and let your writing galore- all good wishes from Team Mangalorean
