‘My Father Died Due To a Doctor’s Negligence & Greed’- Kiran Kumar

Mangaluru: “We all have been hearing about violence against Doctors happening in some hospitals in recent days. Doctor as a profession is a very noble profession. Doctors save thousands of lives every day. But there are some doctors who play with people’s lives because of their greed. My father was a victim of one such Doctor’s greed”.
“My father was taken to a doctor for regular check up and with no history of any depression or mental sickness, he has prescribed ‘Prothieden’ a psychiatric drug with very serious side affects. side affects are more dangerous than the decease itself. One of the very serious side effect is patient suffering from cold flush and hot flush. Patient shivers for few minutes and starts feeling extremely hot after few minutes. Even if they stop taking this medicine, withdrawal symptoms last for few months. Not just that, this medicine also lowers the sodium level. Low sodium level can cause Headache, Confusion, Loss of energy, drowsiness and fatigue, Restlessness and irritability, Muscle weakness, spasms or cramps, Seizures, Coma and even death”.
“Normally patients take whatever medicines doctors prescribe without asking questions like why and what. We had no idea that my father was given a psychiatric medicine and he was put on this dangerous drug for 2 to 3 years. Whenever we complained to the doctor about his problem about cold flush and hot flush, doctor gave evasive replies saying its due to old age. My father was admitted to hospital many times due to low sodium levels, would recover in the hospital after getting medication and then gets discharged and after some time goes back to the hospital for same reasons”
“Our doctor and the hospital were the beneficiaries here. I saw him in drowsy state of mind for almost three years and never realized that this is caused due to the doctor’s greed. I came to know that he has been taking this anti depressant drug which lowers the sodium level, I asked the doctor what was the reason for prescribing this drug. I was shocked to hear the Doctor’s reply. To elevate my dad’s mood. I wondered if the doctor had any idea about the drug’s serious side affects or he was just interested in making money without caring much about his patients. When my father was hospitalized, this doctor referred a nephrologist, ENT specialist and physio therapists. If my father really had depression to any other psychiatric problem he should have referred a psychiatrist instead of prescribing a psychiatric medicine himself”.
“I had a doubt that the doctor prescribed the medicine only to earn commission from the pharmaceuticals company. The doubt was almost confirmed when I came to know that a relative of mine too experienced the same problems after getting medication from the same doctor. I am not revealing the doctor’s name yet because I am not sure if he has prescribed the same medicine to hundreds of his patients in Mangaluru or not. If he has actually committed this crime, I will make sure he will be punished. I wish to reach out to all the patients who are taking this drug and help them by educating them about the side affects. Many people may be taking this drug and suffering without realizing what is causing them the problems”.
