Nationwide strike: Odisha govt asks to maintain law and order
 
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Tuesday asked the district collectors and Director General of Police (DGP) to take preventive measures to maintain law and order in view of the nationwide strike called by trade unions on Wednesday.

“It is apprehended that they may stop vehicular traffic, rail traffic and close down business establishments and picket before government offices, banks and educational institutions, etc.,” Home department special secretary Santosh Bala said in a letter.

Bala asked the district collectors to maintain law and order and ensure maintenance of essential services in the districts.

The officials and staff have been asked to attend office by 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Bala also advised the secretariat staff to to reach office by 9.30 a.m. to facilitate their smooth entry.

The Home department asked the police to remain alert against any untoward incident during the strike and requisite arranagements may also be made for smooth functioning of Central and state government offices.

Notably, several central trade unions called for a nationwide shutdown on a 14-point charter of demands, including social security, minimum wages and employment, among others.

The state units of Congress and Samajwadi Party have extended their support to the strike.
