Natural Disaster, Funds of Rs 3 crore each to DK and Udupi Sanctioned – R V Deshpande
Mangaluru: “The government has sanctioned Rs 3 crore each to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district for compensation to those who have lost their property and lives in the recent rains. This year, there has been excess rain in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. Normally, there is 643mm rain from January till date but this year, we have received 922mm of rain, which is 144% more compared to last year. Due to the heavy rains, there have been landslides causing a lot of damage and affecting vehicular movement. To tackle this natural disaster, the government has instructed the deputy commissioners of each district to have a minimum of Rs 5 crore in relief funds so that those who have been affected can be compensated immediately,” said Revenue Minister R V Deshpande in a press meet held at the DC office here, on June 14.
Addressing the mediapersons, Deshpande said, “Today I visited houses in Anegundi Bejai which were damaged in the recent rains. I have handed over cheques amounting to Rs 1,01,900 to the house owners. Since the compensation amount for partially damaged houses is very less, we will discuss it and increase the amount. Some people residing in rented houses have not received any relief. We are thinking of providing relief to them too as it is a question of humanity.”
Deshpande further said that there have been landslides in the Charmadi Ghat. “The safety of the people is our priority. We have closed the Charmadi Ghat road for safety reasons. Once the road is safe for vehicular movement, we will open it. In the recent rain, 762 transformers have been damaged. 7 people have lost their lives. Many have lost their crop and 748 houses have been damaged,” he added.
Minister U T Khader, DC Sasikanth Senthil, SP Dr. Ravikanthe Gowda, Police Commissioner Vipul Kumar, ADC Vaishali, MLAs Dr. Bharath Shetty, Vedavyas Kamath and Rajesh Naik were also present.
