New Delhi: Former president of Janata Party and present BJP leader Subramanian Swamy appears to forever bask in the eye of the controversy, according to those who closely keep a watch on his actions and statements.

When he was a Union minister many years ago, he had fallen out with the BJP after issuing harsh, personal comments against Atal Behari Vajpayee. He hits the headlines very often with some statements that raise a lot of dust.

The BJP insiders themselves admit that in spite of Swamy’s attempts to be ‘more loyal than the king’, he is not being given any responsible post by the party higher-ups, since they would not know when he would embarrass them with his off-track outbursts.

An example of the contradictions that Swamy stands for is the fact that he has been issuing virulent anti-Muslim statements, while his own daughter Suhasini Haider, a familiar face in the TV channels who is holding a top post with The Hindu newspaper, is married to former bureaucrat Salman Haider’s son.

Critics of Swamy argue that he is making desperate attempts to please the higher-ups by being a Congress-baiter and Muslim-baiter. The BJP needs such people, but it would not allow any concessions in terms of assigning them any responsibility, thus scoring a two-way benefit.

Now the latest word from the man is the announcement of the floating of an outfit called ‘Virat Hindustan Sangam’. He has said that the main aim of the new organization is to persuade Muslims to cede the land in Ayodhya where the Babri mosque stood earlier and build a new edifice on an alternative land elsewhere.

Other mottos he has announced are to inculcate Hindu values in the younger generation, building of the Ram temple, campaigning to ban selling of beef and the like.

He has also said that the outfit will work in close association with the Sangh Parivar. In the matter of its objectives, it will exert pressure on the Union government to take steps, he adds.

Under the aegis of the new outfit, a campaign to seek early building of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya will be taken up from January 1, 2016.

Political observers say that it was a matter of irony that while on the one hand, the slogan ‘All Hindus are one’ is being raised, on the other so may splinter groups calling themselves with different labels like ‘manch’, ‘vedike’, ‘parishat’ and others are being run, instead of being under a single umbrella.
