New Mangalore Port welcomes Cruise Ship ‘Celebrity Constellation’-a Malta Flagged Vessel

Mangaluru: The Cruise Vessel ‘CELEBRITY CONSTELLATION’ was called at New Mangalore Port, on 15 December 2018. The Malta flagged passenger vessel having the length overall of 294 meters with an air draft of 54.3 meters has started its voyage from Cochin Port in India. 2100 passengers and 1100 crew members arrived in this vessel. This is the longest passenger vessel of this season.

“On this occasion, M.T.Krishna Babu, IAS, Chairman, NMPT has on boarded the vessel as a courtesy visit and met the captain of the vessel along with other senior port officers to understand their experience with the port. He emphasized on the initiatives taken by NMP to boost the cruise tourism and stated that, after completion of ongoing project of upgrading existing terminal to state of the art cruise terminal, NMP will be one of the most sought tourist destination by cruise lines and passengers. His speech concluded with the request to share feedback in bringing further improvements. The vessel sailed on the onward voyage to Mormugao Port-Goa later in the evening said a press statement from NMPT traffic manager Y R Belagal.

Belagal also stated that the continuous efforts of port officials and improvements at Port are yielding results with an increasing number of cruise vessels and passengers in every season, and that NMP hah handled 24,258 passengers and 22 cruise vessels during the last cruise season. It is learnt that in the current cruise season, 32 cruise vessels are scheduled to arrive at the NMP, and that the cruise season with the last cruise ship to dock at NMP will be on 7 May 2019.

About Celebrity Constellation:

GTS Celebrity Constellation is a Millennium-class cruise ship of Celebrity Cruises. She was originally named Constellation, but renamed in May 2007. Her three sister ships are the Celebrity Infinity, Summit, and Millennium.

She was built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France. The ship is powered by a COGAS power plant of gas turbines and a steam turbine providing up to 60 megawatts for the electric systems and two 19 MW Rolls-Royce/Alstom MerMaid azimuth thrusters for propulsion. In 2007, an additional diesel engine was fitted as a fuel-saving measure. The ship can run on any combination of the gas turbines or diesel. In port, she generates electrical power from the diesel.

In 2007, Condé Nast Publications reported that Constellation had come top of their Traveler Cruise Poll six times in seven years. During the summer period the ship sails to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean (winter). Celebrity Constellation is scheduled to undergo a dry dock in May 2020.
